WIN 32-2

South Sydney might have had the Superman emblem imprinted on their jerseys on Friday night but if they are to end the club's premiership drought this season, it's going to be anything but a one-man production. The Rabbitohs hardly moved out of first gear in their 32-2 victory against the Raiders at ANZ Stadium, temporarily moving five points clear at the top of the ladder with the Storm and Roosters yet to play this round. It's a little bit early to say they have one hand on the minor premiership, but what they do possess is the most balanced and lethal roster in the NRL. They were far from clinical on a wet night in Sydney's west in front of a crowd of 11,167, but the weather seemed like the only obstacle prohibiting the Rabbitohs from reaching full potential. Their No.1 is redefining the role of a fullback, their wingers know how to find the try line, and their centres are having a field day outside of the best performing halves combination in the competition. It's the land of the giants in the forward pack, but their skill before the line and their footwork at the line make them the most dangerous in the competition. Chuck in the menacing No.9 Issac Luke and you have a football team capable of winning a premiership in any era. Then there's the coach, Michael Maguire, who can name his price for his next contract after the current one expires at the end of next season. His biggest challenge over the next three months is to ensure his team doesn't peak too soon, but you get the feeling they are yet to play their best football this year. ''This team is so far ahead in this comp, but we're still three months away from finals' time,'' Phil Gould said during the commentary. ''It's a long time to wait to have your team peaking around September.'' After a horror Origin debut on Wednesday night, which was partly Greg Inglis' fault, winger Nathan Merritt combined with his Rabbitohs teammate to get across the chalk and bring some joy to what had been a disastrous week for the 30-year-old. Maguire decided to rest Queenslander Chris McQueen after his Origin hit-out two days earlier, and he would've been wishing he'd given Ben Te'o similar treatment. Te'o came from the field with a shin injury in the 36th minute, but is expected to be fit to take his place in the Maroons team for the Origin decider on July 17. Halfback Adam Reynolds came off with eight minutes to go to receive treatment on a leg injury but is expected to be fit for the Rabbitohs' next game, against the Warriors in Perth next Sunday. It came after Andrew Everingham was forced to withdraw from the match after suffering a rib injury in the warm-up, giving Justin Hunt another opportunity on the wing. The news wasn't any better for Canberra, who lost winger Sandor Earl with a dislocated elbow he sustained midway through the second half. Already missing Blake Ferguson (suspended) and Edrick Lee (arm injury), the Raiders' back-line woes were compounded by a groin injury to centre Jack Wighton in the first half. Given the greasy conditions at ANZ Stadium, the Raiders opted for a penalty goal to open their account, but it was to be the only points they scored all night. Back-rower Sam Burgess and Hunt crossed to give South Sydney a 10-2 lead after 20 minutes, before Luke crashed over from dummy half to give the Rabbitohs a 16-2 lead at half-time. Merritt, Bryson Goodwin and Dylan Walker crossed in the second half to give South Sydney their fifth consecutive win against the Raiders and their fourth successive win since their two-point loss to Cronulla in round 11.

Windsor Wolves have solidified 3rd position on the ladder on the back of an amazing 25 minute period of scintillating football before hanging on to achieve an important come-back win over the North Sydney Bears at Centrebet Stadium tonight. Windsor had the short turnaround to contend with from their Saturday battle in the “Brookie Bog” & were forced to make two changes – injured winger George Jennings replaced by Kieran Moss at fullback, which saw Travis Robinson move back to the wing while lock Nathan Smith returned to the side which saw Bryce Cartwright move back to the bench in place of Chris Smith. North Sydney started the first half strongly capitalising on Eto Nabuli’s handling error from a Luke Keary kick to score in the ensuing set when towering backrower Kyle Turner stormed onto a Keary short ball scoring out wide. The successful conversion from hooker Apisai Koroisau gave the Bears a 6-0 after 8 minutes. Another kick retrieval error allowed the Bears to score again when a quick play the ball allowed Koroisau to dive over from dummy half to score the simplest of tries & the Bears led 12-0 after 17 minutes. The Bears played solid percentage football for the rest of the half without ever really threatening to trouble the scorers & went to half time leading 12-0 hoping that their grinding style of play would lead to a avalanche of points in the second half over a tired looking Wolves team. The second half did see an avalanche of points but amazingly it went the way of the Wolf Pack. The first twenty minutes saw the Wolves score a better than a point a minute in an amazing passage of play that turned the game on its head. The point scoring spree started in just the 43rd minute when a Capewell midfield bomb was regathered by Bryce Cartwright who somehow managed to get an offload away to Wes Naiqama who then shifted play back to the left where the backs created the overlap for Eto Nabuli to score his 13th try of the season out wide. In the very next set, a quick play the ball on halfway allowed Foster to find Cartwright skirting down Norths’ left edge providing a Gidley-like flick pass to put Naiqama away down the touch-line & drawing the fullback before providing the inside pass to five eighth Liam Ayoub who scored next to the posts & suddenly the Wolf Pack trailled 12-10. The Wolves incredibly hit the lead in the next set after fullback Matt Evans fumbled a bomb straight into the arms of a chasing Bryce Cartwright to scored the easiest of tries under the posts to give his team a 16-12 lead. Windsor weren’t done with just yet as Norths coughed up possession early in the tackle count, gifting the Wolves another opportunity to score points which they duly obliged after some great lead up work from Capewell combined with that man again, Cartwright, this time running amok on Norths’ right fringe to put back rower Vaipuna Tia Kilifi in for the try & after 53 minutes the Wolves suddenly led 20-12. The scoring spree was complete when Kieran Moss broke thru the brittle Bears’ right side defense before finding centre Geoff Daniela backing up on the inside to score the under the posts to give the on-fire Wolf Pack a 26-12 lead with over 20 minutes remaining. Windsor looked to have the game under control & took the foot off the pedal somewhat & with five minutes they were almost made to pay for it when the Bears scored two back-to- back tries, bringing the margin back to just 2 points. The first try came after Keary chip kicked from halfway & regathered, drew the fullback before passing to centre Bennett Leslie to score., while the second try came moments later when a Darren Nicholls bomb was regathered by Keary, who sent his winger Curtis Johnston on a diagonal run to score in the left corner. With Koroisau’s successful sideline conversion, the Bears trailed 26-24 with still two minutes remaining but any hopes of winning this one were dashed when prop Josh Starling knocked on from the kickoff. A late penalty conceded in the next set by the Bears allowed Capewell to wind down the clock to kick the ensuing penalty goal as the siren sounded to give the Wolves a morale boosting 28-24 win.
