WIN 21-20

South Sydney extracted revenge for a one-point loss 13 weeks ago at Lottoland to return the favour and beat Manly on Rabbitohs home turf 21-20 at ANZ Stadium on Saturday. The winning point came five minutes from full-time through an Adam Reynolds field goal. Coach Wayne Bennett said his players just needed to stop beating themselves to taste success again, which is exactly what they did over the Sea Eagles. The Rabbitohs completed at 89 percent, won the penalty count 8-2 and made just six errors all game. Both teams had very different missions before kick-off. Manly was after a fourth win in a row, which would get them into the top four, while South Sydney was trying to end a string of losses at four. Of course the Rabbitohs' run at the start of 2019 (10 wins from 11 games) was halted by the Sea Eagles in that golden point win 13-12. Manly centre Moses Suli got his name into the headlines in round 17 with two knock-backs eventually leading to tries but controversy surrounded both. Well, the South Sydney fans at least were convinced the ball went forward on both occasions by the volume of their howls in protest. The officials thought otherwise. Rabbitohs fullback Adam Doueihi was denied his first try of the year, when the bunker confirmed an obstruction on Manly’s Brendan Elliott in the 15th minute. The angst for Souths fans continued when Cade Cust scored in the north-eastern corner 50 seconds later, after it appeared Suli had knocked on in the lead-up. Referee Grant Atkins didn’t consult the bunker this time and pointed to the spot for a try. Doueihi’s afternoon didn’t seem to be getting any better when Sea Eagles winger Jorge Taufua hit him with a bell-ringer of a tackle not long after. The visitors were ahead 6-2 but not for long. Another stand-in player – this time for Sam Burgess (shoulder) – came in the form of back-rower Dean Britt, who scored his first NRL try followed by an Adam Reynolds conversion. That made it 8-6 in the Rabbitohs favour and the score had changed three times in 25 minutes. The Rabbitohs then got their skates on for the final minutes of the first half scoring two more tries – to Dane Gagai (36th) in the right corner and Campbell Brown (39th) in the left. Suddenly the scoreboard read 18-6 and Manly walked to the sheds with their heads down. The first half did bring at least one bright spot for Manly. Forward Curtis Sironen got to play against younger brother Bayley. It was the older brother that got things moving for Manly after the break, with a sublime Daly Cherry-Evans pass for Curtis Sironen to bust over out wide. Then Suli knocked the ball backwards for a second time – on this occasion trying to gather up a wayward Damien Cook pass – and raced 75 metres to score. Now a 12-point half-time lead was reduced to just four, 18-14, and there was still 30 minutes left on the clock. A Reynolds penalty gave a little more buffer but Manly thought they had caught up when Cust crossed five metres to the left of the uprights in the 60th minute. Referee Grant Atkins labelled it a ‘try’ but the bunker over-ruled when replays showed the ball dislodged by Dane Gagai starting to slip down Cust’s forearm. The score remained 20-14. Manly’s cause wasn’t helped losing hooker Manase Fainu with severe cramp with 13 minutes to go. Cust followed him seven minutes later after a head knock. But out of crisis came cheers from the small group of Manly fans when Joel Thompson crossed nine minutes from time off a Sironen bust. Garrick converted and it was all locked up 20-20. Reynolds ended it with his 75th minute field goal.

v Blacktown, 12:45pm

LOSS 22-30

Late Changes - Amone, Su'A and Sironen are out. Dillon starts prop, Peoplessecond row, Rodwell lock, Gordon, O'Connor and Jurd on the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs Canterbury Cup side have been defeated 30-22 by the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles at ANZ Stadium. The Rabbitohs just fell short, nearly overcoming a 24-10 half-time deficit to close the gap to two points in the final ten minutes, but Blacktown took home the two points after scoring a try on fulltime. It was a far from the desired start for the Red and Green, with Blacktown crossing over just two minutes to prop Andy Saunders, giving them a 6-nil lead early on. A shift on the left-hand side from Blacktown nearly saw them double their lead, but luckily for the Rabbitohs, the final pass went to ground. The next couple of minutes saw each team looking to get a result from one another, with the Rabbitohs getting their first opportunity to strike after a penalty on halfway gave them territory. But the Red and Green were unable to score with a number of wayward passes preventing any progress. Ill-discipline from Blacktown gave further territory to the home side, and eventually, it was fullback Corey Allan who swooped on the left-hand side, dummying his way to the line. The sideline conversion from Mawene Hiroti was unsuccessful, with the scores at 6-4 after 12 minutes. The fortunes of the Rabbitohs continued as more ill-discipline from Blacktown saw the ensuing kick-off going out on the full, with the Red and Green starting on the 20 metres line after the kick for touch. This time it was the right-side who would produce the points, with quick hands seeing Leigh Higgins touch down in the corner. Another sideline attempt from Hiroti saw the Steeden hit the left upright and bounce in, giving the Rabbitohs the lead for the first time in the match. But Blacktown Workers would hit back soon after as a left-side break saw Abbas Miski cross over. Miski would convert his own try to give Blacktown the lead with a quarter of the match gone. South Sydney nearly struck back through a try of their own, as an attacking grubber kick from Allan was dropped by centre Jacob Gagan, who was simultaneously tackled as the ball was lost. Despite sitting last on the competition ladder, the Sea Eagles put in a determined effort at the back end of the first half, scoring two further tries to give them an unlikely 22-10 lead. With the Rabbitohs giving their opponents a number of penalties in the final minutes of the first half, including one in the final seconds, saw the away side take a fourteen-point lead going to the break. A penalty in the first two minutes in the second half gave the Red and Green much needed ascendency, and while it looked like Hiroti would go over in the corner, the flying Kiwi was called into touch after stepping over the sideline in his attempt to score. Just as they looked to be gaining momentum, the Rabbitohs invited the Sea Eagles to return serve, but a knock-on from the in-goal from Blacktown gave the home side a much needed seven-tackle set. Another break from Blacktown saw winger Tevita Funa nearly go over again, only for the heroics of Hiroti to bat a bouncing grubber back, giving his side possession and saving a certain four-pointer. A half-break from Connor Tracey set up the side for another opportunity to score, with a Blake Taaffe grubber being fumbled by Miski. Taaffe threw another roll of the dice with a second grubber, but this time it was thwarted by the Sea Eagles. And Blacktown would make the Rabbitohs pay, with a kick nearly resulting in a 40/20 being recovered by Corey Allan, only for the fullback to go into touch upon catching the ball. Not to be deterred however, the Rabbitohs scored two quick-fire tries with Higgins bagging his double and Taaffe crossing the line to close the gap to just six points with just over fifteen minutes left. A break from Josh Cook had the ANZ Stadium crowd cheering for the third try in five minutes, but the young hooker was unable to hold onto the ball after colliding with the incoming defence. The Red and Green's momentum would continue as a halfway penalty in the ruck gave the side further territory, which allowed centre Levi Dodd to shifty from the right to the left side of the field, and an around the corner offload from Jack Johns saw Gagan put Hiroti over in the corner. The winger's conversion was unsuccessful, with the side trailing by two with ten left in the match. In a tense final few moments of the match, both sides traded errors in their attacking half, with Blacktown's offloading troubling the Rabbitohs but also forcing errors. An attacking kick from Kane Elgey two minutes from fulltime forced a dropout, with a strip penalty on the next set giving them further possession, with Blacktown scoring on the bell after a wayward offload was picked up by Alfred Smalley.

Womens NSWRL Premiership - Round 11

v St Marys, St Marys Leagues Stadium, Sat Jul 13 11:30am

LOSS 8-34

Late Changes - Clay, Mo'ale, McGrady, O'Mealey, Allende, Riley and Kennedy are out. Nean and Vunakece start prop, Murray second row, Doyle at lock. The South Sydney Rabbitohs Harvey Norman Women's Premiership side have been defeated 34-8 against St Marys Saints at St Marys Leagues Stadium in their final match of the season. An inexperienced Rabbitohs fought hard against the odds, and with a number of senior players unavailable, it was the young contingent who put in a determined performance against their much more battle-hardened opponents. It was a fast start to the match, with St Marys scoring after just five minutes through Letitia Taylor, with the conversion giving them a 6-nil lead. Not to be deterred though, the Rabbitohs struck back quickly through young winger Nikki Baird, closing the gap to two points. But the experience of the St Marys side would get them ahead to a 12-4 halftime score as Malia Tu'ifua touched down for the third try within the first fifteen minutes. The second half began almost identically as the first, with St Marys scoring after just over a minute. Again, the Rabbitohs would swiftly reply through utility Karri Doyle, but with another unsuccessful conversion, the scores would stand at 18-10 after 40 minutes. St Marys would extend their lead further with a try to Pauline Piliae four minutes later, with the Red and Green needing three converted tries to take the lead in the final fifteen minutes. But much to the disappointment of the Red and Green, their opponents laid the final blow with two tries in the final ten minutes. Head Coach Danny Allende was proud of his side's effort in their final match of the year. The girls tried really hard, put their heart out today on the field,” he said. “There are some great young reps in the Saints sides and our girls did us proud.”
