South Sydney v Western Suburbs

WIN 13-8

Selected Round 5 Teams

Notwithstanding the wet, close on 1000 people assembled at Metters' Ground, and, considering the elements and the greasy nature of the ball, play, was of an interesting nature. Western Suburbs put up a good fight. Western Suburbs kicked off, and rushed well, into South Sydney's 25. They relieved with a good kick. From a scrum at half-way South Sydney secured, and the passes sending the ball out to Thompson, saw him score close to the posts after five minutes' play. Cann kicked a goal. South Sydney, 5 to nil. From the kick out Western Suburbs were awarded a free, and Naylor sent the ball out well in the 25. McFadyen, running strongly, took it on to the other 25, where he was well collared by Collier. South Sydney attacked, and a passing rush was neatly frustrated. Courtney picking up, passed smartly to Wall who, dodging well, scored a good try, which Medcalf converted. 5 all. Western Suburb's again attacked, a dangerous rush being well stopped by Hallett. Half-time 5 all.

Resuming, South Sydney set to work, and some pretty passing was seen. From a scrum Thompson broke away, and after beating a few wen, passed out to Gilbert, who over-ran the ball. Shortly after Wall neatly intercepted, and running to the full-back, looked like scoring, but Hallett tackled him well. Western Suburbs worked back to half way, where from a scrum South Sydney secured, and McCabe sent on to Thompson, to Collier, to Gilbert, who scored a try but Nicholls failed at goal. South Sydney, 8 to 5. South Sydney came away again with a splendid rush. From a scrum at half-way McCabe secured, and working the blind side, beat several opponents and wriggled himself over in the corner, a grand effort. Darmody made a good but unsuccessful attempt at goal. South Sydney, 11, Western Suburbs 5. Shortly after a scrum was formed at halfway, and from the ensuing scramble Gilbert picked' up, and running well passed to Tully, who at the right moment gave to Naylor, who dived over in the corner. South Sydney 11 to 8. Just on the cull of time Hallett fielded a high ball, and with a beautiful kick landed a goal from near half-way flag. South Sydney 13 to 8. T.McMahon, referee.

The downfall of Newtown at Wentworth Park has placed South Sydney at the head of the table with Glebe second, only one point behind.
