South Sydney v Balmain

Sat Jun 17, 3:15pm

WIN 24-10

About 5000 peoople witnessed this match, a hard and strenuous game, at the Agricultural Ground. Both teams showed good football, though South Sydney's combination was a good deal the better. Among the spectators were the visiting New Zealand combination. Butler having set the leather in motion, play hovered about Balmain 25 for a period, with S.S. still the aggressors, and Gilbert prominent, lie snapped up, and within five minutes from the kick-off shot over the goal line, but he failed at goal. Although, he is generally to be relied upon when taking the kick. South Sydney, 3 to nil. Play was very willing, and Spence was cautioned for unneccessarily rough play. The Waterside's came away, a fine movement being stopped by a knock-on. From the ensuing scrum, Butler got his three-quarters going, but wild, passing stopped them. The Black and Gold were trying hard to penetrate, only to be driven back. They had plenty of go, but, little combination: A fine passing bout, in which McCabe, Gilbert, Hallett and Cann figured, ended close to success, the- ball going out of touch at Balmain 25. The Black and Gold forwards, now came in a solid body from their own 25 to half-way. There, from a scrum, S.S. looked certain to score, but Frazer's catlike movement in intercepting saved the situation. Give and take play followed, Widmer, getting hold, raised the hopes of Balmain, but a South player interfered in time. Then came the tit-bit of the day, Gilbert, getting hold at centre, gained ground and then passed to Cann, to Leveson, to Hallett, to Butler, who scored the try. Nicholls failed at goal. South Sydney 6 to nil. Immediately after the kick from centre, McMurtie and Hilliard were ordered off the field for indulging in play which was not according to the rules of the game. Both packs were now playing in great heart. McCabe shot out, attended by Gilbert and Hallett, but Frazer tackled the South five-eighth beautifully, causing McCabe to lose the ball, a Balmain player being handy, forced. From the kick-out Balmain looked dangerous, play being taken to South Sydney's line, most of the three-quarters taking a hand. A magnificent passing bout ended in Wright crossing and Hickey adding the goal. South Sydney 6 to 5. The leather travelled up and down at a great pace. Graves led his pack in a fine concerted movement, being stopped close to success. A beautiful piece of full-back play was shown by Frazer, who, gathering it in at his 25, ran it to the S.S. 25, drawing a round of applause. 6 to 5 at half-time.

Resuming, South, started a pretty passing movement taking the ball to the goal-line, where Frazer again saved in the face of big odds. South's persistent attacks gave Balmain a hard test. The Black and Gold had held their own in the scrum up to this point. Now Gilbert set out, attended by McCabe, whose off-side pulled them up. An exchange of kicks ended in favor of South close to Balmain line. Here, from a scrum, H.Butler got over with a try. A.Butler converted it. South Sydney, 11 to 5. Cann, being disabled, play stopped for a time. No sooner in play than Spence, speeding like a three-quarter, crossed-the line after fooling several opponents. Butler failed at goal. South Sydney, 14 to 5. Balmain, striving hard to frustrate the defence, were driven back again and again. Then Hallett, taking a penalty kick at Balmain 25, added a goal for South Sydney, 16 to 5. Out again, the same player accepted a pass from Gilbert, and after side-stepping several opponents scored the try. Brown failed at goal. South Sydney, 19 to 5. South Sydnev still pressed. McCabe, hopping about almost crossed. He lost the ball, but recovered and crossed amid cheers. The same player converted. South Sydney 24 to 5. Balmain put in a final effort, Holloway to the fore, took play to South's line anil passed to Appolony, who scored. Hickey converted. South Sydney victors by 24 to 10. Mr. L. Kearney, referee.

Jack Leveson has injured his knee, and is of a serious nature, which necessitates him being confined to his room for the next couple of weeks.

Second Grade - Round 5

v Balmain, RAS Showground, 2:00pm

DRAW 6-6

This was the early game at the Agricultural Ground. The play was of a sterling character to the final whistle, the teams being very evenly matched. For the first twenty minutes the play was very open, the teams attacking alternately. From a scrum near Balmain's 25 Fletcher sent to Nathan, who cut through on the blind side and passed near the line to Collier, who crossed in. No goal resulted. Almost immediately on resuming Balmain attacked hotly, and from a free in a fair position King sent up the two points. Within five minutes he repeated the performance, and the teams retired shortly after with the score unaltered. On resuming Balmain for some minutes had South Sydney hard on the defensive, but after King had failed badly from a penalty kick right in front. Clay gradually worked to Balmain's 25, where after some hot ruck work Collier crossed in. Fletcher's attempt at goal lacked power. Back on the toe Balmain rushed it, and from a mark, King sent up his third goal. Playing five in the three-quarter line, South Sydney kept Balmain on the move, but could not force their way over. The game ending in a draw, each team securing 6 points.
