South Sydney v Eastern Suburbs

WIN 12-8

Selected Round 7 Teams

At the Sports Ground about 10,000 people witnessed South Sydney triumph over Eastern Suburbs in a hard but unattractive game. The forwards largely monopolised play and kept the game close, preventing the backs of either side from opening up the game. Messengar won the toss, and Hallett kicked off, with only the faintest breeze blowing. The kick was recalled, and from the scrum Butler, McCabe, and Hallett passed into the 25, where Hallett sent it on to Stuntz, who kicked along the wing into touch. E.S. forwards, led by M. Frawley, rushed it out, but Fry stopped them and centred, Mable toed it back, and it went out near the 25 flag. A fierce ruck struggle followed, from which Campbell emerged and zig-zagged his way to near the posts, but the whistle had sounded. An exchange of passes between H. Butler, Hallet, and Fry relieved the tension. The Red and Green gradually forged ahead. Butler whipped round a scrum in the 25, but was downed, and the forwards dribbled on. Spence picked up and ran straight ahead, then whipped out to Nicholls on the line, and he scored. A. Butler's kick from a difficult angle failed. S.S. 3 to nil. Eastern Suburbs kept the Red and Green quiet by forcing the pace for a while, but the referee had to caution an impetuous forward for playing the man instead of the ball. South's backs got going again, and Butler and McCabe carried play into E.S. territory. Dalton stopped the rush by upending Gilbert after the centre had cut-in nicely, and then McCabe secured and darted ahead, but was surrounded by the opposition. Mable was injured after E.S. had worked out, and C.Lees came on. McCabe missed a pass from Butler, and M.Frawley got to it and toed it on, but the rush was repulsed. Gilbert kicked to Kinghorn, who was illegally prevented from following on by a S.S. forward. Messenger's kick at goal failed, but a moment later the E.S. forwards rushed goalwards, and from another penalty against S.S. for coming round the scrum too quickly, Messenger landed a goal. S.S. 3 to 2. Play was somewhat loose and disjointed, and marred by frequent infringements by South Sydney. Hilliard and McCabe threatened the goal-line, but Messenger dived at the latter, and the forwards cleared past the 25 line, but a penalty pulled them up. Frawley, Pearce and Griffiths put more life into their efforts, and for some time Eastern Suburbs had the better of the game, but Messenger's luck was out in goal-kicking, and he missed several easy shots at goal. However, the forwards pegged away, and with Griffiths and Williams coming hard at him on the goal-line, Brown kicked up the centre of the field, and Messenger marked outside the 25. Better success met this try at goal and Eastern Suburbs led by 4 points to 3 at half-time. It was largely an uninteresting spell, marred by frequent penalties and a lifeless display, by lie backs.

Eastern Suburbs opened the second spell, but Gilbert returned the kick-off, finding the line past half-way. Dalton, Cody, and Campbell worked the ball back again, passing nicely into South Sydney's 25, where they put a solid defence. After some lively play near half-way the Red and Green forwards asserted themselves, and when near the line McCabe raced in front, but White bustled him and D.Frawley swept across from the wing and raked in and then booted out. Another rush by Hilliard and Darmody was blocked by Pearce and M.Frawley, who returned to half-way. South Sydney were playing with greater dash now, and the game vastly improved. A great cheer went up from South Sydney supporters as Hallett dashed for the goal, but Kinghorn pulled him down. From the scrum in the corncr Butler passed wildly back to McCabe, who failed to get it. Back to centre it was rushed, then Stuntz secured and kicked to the left wing, where Nicholls and H.Butler raced away, but the latter was forced into touch. Quick and solid tackling kept McCabe out twice as he tried to trick the defence. White, transferred to neutral territory, and the game quietened a little. E.S. were leading on points, and Cann made desperate efforts to open up the game, but unavailingly. Griffiths was to the fore in a neat dribbling rush by the Stripes, but a penalty spoiled their efforts, and when just inside halfway Hallett dropped at goal and landed a beauty. S.S., 5, to 4. Cann who had been hanging on to the jerseys of the pack, now dropped out as an extra five-eighth. From a scrum on the E.S. 25 line South's forwards, moved ahead in a bunch. McCabe was frisking about on the outskirts of the pack, and pounced on the leather and turned in the hands of a tackler and passed to Hilliard, on the line. He fell over near the posts, and Hallett converted. South Sydney led 10 to 4. E.S. livening up, Messenger and White came along the wing; the latter inpassed, but Stuntz got to it and kicked out of danger. Cody snapped up in his own territory, and ran to centre, and passed to Dalton, who sent it back to Cody in the 25, and the five-eighth passed to Frawley, on the wing, but he was forced out at the corner flag. Another rush forward, and Messenger dropped a neat field goal. 10 to 6. Hallett vied with him for the supremacy, and on the half-way line dropped a second remarkable goal. South Sydney 12 to 6. Messenger kicked to the right wing, and collided, with A South Sydney forward, who had pulled up. The referee thought he had interfered with the three-quarter, and from the penalty kick Messenger left the score 12 to 8 in favor of South Sydney. Even play followed to the whistle. Mr. T.McMahon, referee.

Second Grade - Round 6

v Eastern Suburbs, Sydney Sports Ground, 2:00pm

LOSS 0-15

Eastern Suburbs kicked off and scored soon after. Surridge kicking two penalty goals in quick succession. Eastern Suburbs kept up a hot attack, and from a scrum Hinchey obtained, passed out to Kerr, to Glassbrook, who scored near the corner. The try was not converted. At halftime the scores were, Eastern Suburbs, 7 points South Sydney nil. On resuming South Sydney showed improved form and kept Eastern Suburbs defending for twenty minutes. The talking of both teams was deadly, and hard knocks were frequent. Foran picked up outside half-way and passed to Dalton. A scrum followed, from which Thompson obtained and scored a clever try. The attempt at goal was a failure, but Glassbrook followed on fast, and owing to interferance was awarded a try for Eastern Suburbs which was converted by Surridge. Eastern Suburbs 15 points, South Sydney nil. These were the final scores.
