Played at Sports Ground. With most of tho cracks turning out, good football was looked for, and tho spectators were not disappointed. From the kick-off play sparkled, the teams attacking in turn. A passing rush by Newtown carried the ball well inside South Sydney's half, a penalty being given them. Stewart sent the leather over the bar. South Sydney attacked, and for a minute or two Newtown were hard pressed, but a penalty brought relief. Breaking away, Newtown set out, the ball flying from hand to hand. Talbot, coming along at top pace, gathered in and scored. Stewart's kick failed. With five points against them South Sydney began to press, and scrums followed in Newtown's 25. Newtown, W and V.Farnsworth and Talbot prominent, broke away, but tho defence was sound, and play went back to half-way. Here it hovered till half-time arrived with the scores:— Newtown 5, South Sydney nil.

Resuming, A. Butler kicked off, and South Sydney attacked, but Newtown forwards, keeping the ball at toe, gradually forced them back, and a penalty to Newtown gave Stewart a chance, which he accepted. Newtown 7 points, South Sydney nil. A minute after he had another shot, but Gilbert gathered in and ran it out. Back it came, and offside against South Sydney saw Russell send up two more points. Newtown 9, South Sydney nil. Intercepting a pass just outside his 25, Gilbert set out with Hucker racing alongside, . Coming to Hawkes he tried to swerve past him, when a pass out to Hucker would have meant an almost certain try, and Russell tackled him from behind. This respite was only temporary as Hale, following on, blocked a kick, scored, and Darmody added the extras, South Sydney 5, Newtown 9. Attacking, Newtown penned South Sydney to their 25, and Green, offside in the scrum, gave them two points, Russell kicking a goal. Full-time. Newtown 11, South Sydney 5.

Second Grade Trial

v Newtown, Metters Sports Ground, 2:00pm

Played at Metters's ground. Souths were, first to attack, Darmody speeding up the field at a great rate. Newtown quickly rallied, however, and the ball was taken by Fenely and Bolt to the other end, where the former made several determined efforts to score. South Sydney forwards, headed by Groves, then put in some good dribbling rushes, but could not score. Fenely rah from one end to, the other, but was tackled on the line. Half-time, sounded, neither side having scored. Newtown were first to score after the resumption, Nelson picking up in the ruck and diving over. The same player converted. Souths forced the play for a time, but Fenely, racing through his opponents, scored under the posts. No goal resulted. Shortly afterwards, Leahy, went off the field, having sustained a broken arm. Again Newtown attacked, and Collins, taking a pass on the right wing, scored a try, which, was not converted. Russell obtained another try for Newtown, but the kick again failed. The final scores were, Newtown 14, South Sydney nil.
