Selected Round 8 Teams

At the Sports Ground 4500 people witnessed North Sydney soundly trounce their opponents, in the second half displaying good pace and solid tackling. O.Brown took the place of Hucker who retired injured. North Sydney kicked off from the Paddington end with the sun shining in their eyes. They at once became aggressive, and frequently got moving in South Sydney territory. O.Deane and Broomham, exchanging passes nicely down the right wing, gained 50 yards. Later Wilkinson and M.McFarlane dashed down the centre, where Hallett stopped them and kicked back to half-way. South Sydney then gained a good position on the left wing, Hucker kicking down the touch line and the ball rolling out at the flag before O.Deane could get to it. North got clear for a few minutes, but another rush, started at centre by A.Butler wheeling it from the scrum and sending it in again to McCabe, who shot past the Red and Black five-eighth and ran to the full back, then sent it on to Leveson, who set off for the wing and passed to Thompson, to Hucker, who dived at the line, but was tackled, and lost the ball, Sullivan saving. South Sydney worked across to the posts, and Leveson booted through the ruck and followed up, but the Red and Black were penalised, and A. Butler landed an easy penalty goal. S.S., 2 to nil. This was quickly followed with another score after McCarthy and Green had threatened on the left wing, Walsh tackling McCabe as he got the lost pass near the line. Worked out to the centre, there Hucker was grabbed by Broomham, who had him round the waist, with Hucker's head tuckled underneath the tackier. But suddenly Hucker released himself and shot down the wing, moving very fast. At the 25 he passed in, and after doing so one of the North Sydney centre three-quarters bumped him into touch, and Hucker was knocked out. The movement veered in-field, Leveson running it on and sending it on to A.Butler, who ran across in front of the posts, but came in again and transferred to a forward, but got it once more and scored at the posts. He also landed the goal. S.S. 7 to nil. It was a very, peculiar reversal of the attack, but for his reward in initiating it Hucker was disabled. Very even play followed, until North Sydney came along with some life, and on the right wing Broomham ran well infield, and the forwards rucked to the line. Well inside the 25 the brothers McFarlane and the threequarters, passing neatly, started across goal. O.Deane crossed on the left wing, running round to the posts. L.Deane kicked the goal. S.S. 7 to 5. South Sydney displayed a little more energy now, but were met with spirited tackling by the Red and Black. Collier and McCabe were prominent in movements down the right wing, but O.Deane and Walsh repulsed them. Hallett attempted a field goal from well outside half way, but it just missed the posts, a great kick. The visitors made a further attempt to forge ahead, McFarlane, Taplin, and Sullivan dribbling nicely into the 25, where the ball rolled into touch. South Sydney worked back to centre, and at half-time they led by 7 to 5, North Sydney having made quite a good effort, though wanting in the fine points of combination among the backs.

Hallett opened the second half, but L.Deane's return went into touch at the 25 flag. South Sydney kept play in 25, see-sawing from wing to wing. Green and A.Butler each taking penalty kicks, but failing to land the goal. North pulled, themselves together, and dashed down the rignt wing, but were not allowed to proceed far. However, M.McFarlane, attempted a goalofrom 40 yards out, but it dropped short, and South Sydney started, out with it. At the 25 line Leveson passed to a comrade, but Sullivan intercepted, and darted off, circling round the three-quarters and running in, scoring behind the posts. M.McFarlane landed an easy goal, and North Sydney, led by 10 points to 7. The cheering was very hearty. The lead was not to the Red and Green's liking, and they were livelier now than formerly, making the pace warm, but the visiting forwards met them so spiritedly that they made little headway. O.Deane started his side again, and racing fast down the left wing, he and Wilkinson ran well inside the 25 before the rush, was stopped. Spence was too impetuous here, and for off-side round the scrum incurred a penalty, which M.McFarlane turned to advantage, landing a goad goal from well out on the wing. N.S. 12 to 7. North Sydney were now playing over the men in the forwards, and quickly increased their lead. In South Sydney territory the forwards were fighting it out in good style when Broomham shot into the ruck and went hard to the goal-line. He was pulled down, but Sullivan fought his way ahead to the line. There from the back of the forwards S.McFarlane picked up, shot round, and dived over as an opponent tackled him. M.McFarlane's kick sailed out side the posts. N.S. 15 to 7, and 20 minutes to play. The South Sydney men were thoroughly aroused now, but they did not look the stronger side; the forwards being beaten. Butler and McCabe carried well down the field. They worked across field, exchanging short passes among the three-quarters, but came back again to the right wing, where H.Butler picked up a dozen yards from the line and sent it to Hilliard, but L.Deane sent him into touch at the flag. Working across again a long kick went to Hallett, with a good opening if he had secured, but he dropped it. A moment later, when South Sydney were still forcing matters, Broomham again intercepted, and ran from 25 to 25 before being pulled down by Brown. The forwards, delving in hard, worked infield. In the centre O.Deane, Taplin, and L.Deane exchanged passes to the corner, where the last-named came down. A rally en sued, from which Gosper emerged and landed the try, but Walsh made a poor attempt at goal. North Sydney 18 to 7. Souths were being urged, on by their supporters, and Spence, Leveson, Hallett. and Collier came fast down the right wing, Collier sending it in again to Leveson, but Taplin and the McFarlanes ran it out of danger. They came back again, and Hilliard cut through the loose and went for the line near the posts, but Walsh grassed him inches short, and South Sydney were a beaten team. T.McMahon, referee.
