Selected Final Team

South Sydney v Glebe, in summery weather, at the Agricultural Ground, drew the crowd, about 13,000 turning out to see the seasons final for the City Cup, in other words, gold medals donated by the New South Wales Rugby League. The Glebe were favorites, because they had already twice vanquished South Sydney, and had a much , superior record throughout, the season. But on this occasion me youth, pace, and football charm of South Sydney's backs pulled the side through in a style that must have made the club supporters blink their eyes, for most of this nippy, spectacular football was, shown by youths who were disporting amongst the juniors only a month or two back. Some of tha youths on the side of the Glebe likewise sparkled, but they could not get the other backs to work up the pace. In the second half South Sydney scored 27 points to 3, and after a time had the Glebe a very badly beaten combination. With the exception of scrummaging and solid ruck play, South Sydney were a good deal superior, their sharp passing and running quite eclipsing anything shown by their opponents. Thus ends a very good season, and it is to be hoped the lesson South Sydney has learnt - the value of youth — will not be readily forgotten.

For South Sydney A.Butler kicked off at 3:30, a stiff nor-wester blowing diagonally against his side. For the opening ten minutes this enabled the Reds to have a good deal the better, of the play, though the superiority of, the pack in securing possession was also a prime factor. Two bursts by Regan and Algie along the right wing kept the Strides on the defensive. Then play worked, across field. From a scrum the Glebe forwards heeled to Regan, on to McKivat, who sent it out to Thiering, with each player gaining ground. The pass to Gray was low, and the centre dropped the ball, in endeavoring to recover winch Thiering was illegally interfered with by C Horder. From the penalty Thlerlng tried at goal from the twenty-five, and narrowly missed. A smart rush between McCabe and Smith carried play to centre, and in an instant the South Sydney backs much nippier than their opponents figured in a burst which gained a great deal of ground. A.Butler gave a smart reverse pass to McCabe, to C.Horder, who got off the mark sharply, cut in, and then passed to H.Horder, to Collier, who was downed, the tackling being very skilful. Tho Reds reversed the attack, and Regan twice got the backs moving, bringing play into the twenty-ftve. There the Glebe half, getting it from the forwards, passed to McKivat, who sped towards the corner, and sent it to Thiering who, on being jammed, returned it in-field when close to the goal-line, but McKivat was lying on the ground, and unable to reach the ball. Thiering ought to have gone for the line. A South Sydney back made a long kick out, and it was taken by Bolewski, who, however, was downed, and played the ball with the Red and Greens surrounding him. Thompson picked it up and passed to Hilliard, to H.Horder, who flew along the touch-line, with the crowd roaring. However, Trewin finished his run by a good tackle outside the twenty-five. These burts showed the South Sydney backs to be much nippier than the Glebe, Glebe quickly returned to the attack mainly through the forwards, and the defenders were penalised inside their twenty-five. A well kicked goal by Thiering from a place a few yard's beyond the twenty five, and on the wing. gave the Reds a 2 points lead. Logan now retired with an injured shoulder, and was replaced by May. South Sydney broke away, and play for some time was centred on the eastern side. A movement by Collier and McCabe gained ground, and a little later the Horders figured in an attractive burst, with side-stepping. The Glebe backs were handling the ball rather badly, and their failures were causing them to be driven further back. Ultimately a South Sydney forward secured in the loose on the right wing near goal, and passed to Nicholls to H.Horder, who dashed towards the goal and whipped a good pass to his brother, who was left to face Bolewski, whom he beat by side-stepping and cutting, inside him, a clever finish to a good movement. H.Horder failed at goal. South Sydney 3-2. Glebe swung into action again, with the play not very concerted, though the forwards were displaying plenty of dash. Bolewski kicked from midfield, to Smith on the eastern touch-line. The full-back followed up smartly and blocked the three-quarter's return, and , the ball rebounded into touch in the corner. Bolewski and Regan were the only Glebe backs equal to the opposition in pace and vitality. After scrummaging near the line, a defending, player passed back, and the two Horders, on being pressed, passed in goal, and eventually Collier attempted to run out beneath the cross-bar, but was downed. A scrum took place at the posts. Bui the South Sydney forwards, heeled it and Butler, whipped it to H.Horder who burst through the Glebe three-quarters, but in endeavoring to beat Bolewski near half-way he slipped down. The Reds attacked again, and Thiering missed a penalty shot from a tolerably easy position. At half-time South Sydney led by 3 to 2.

Within three minutes of resuming South Sydney increased their lead. From a scrum on the wing the forwards heeled to A.Butler, who ran round the blind side. McCabe, who had been stationed on the open side, suddenly doubled around the scrum, and, taking Butler's pass, flew along touch, beat two opponents by his fleetness and near the twenty five line passed in to a comrade, on to Nicholls, who dashed across ten yards from the corner flag. It was a sparkling tit-bit, and demonstrated the difference in pace of the two teams. H.Horder failed at goal. South Sydney, 6 to 2. Glebe worked down the field again, a rush by Pert, Redmond, and McKivat gaining ground. Outside their twenty-five, South Sydney were penalised. Spence off-side, but Thiering failed at goal. Following up the drop-out, Which bounced awkwardly and beat Thiering, Almond kicked it forward. With Thompson he sped after the bali, which flew past Bolewski from their feet. Near the goal-line Thomson picked it up and scored, in a fair position. H.Horder converted. South; Sydney, 11 to 2. This rush saw the Glebe men again outpaced. Another burst along the left wing by Collier and H.Horder ended in the latter high-punting in and up field, and McCabe, who was considerably off-side, followed up and touched down as the full-back lost the ball. The cheers were premature, as the referee was wide awake, and McCabe was penalised for off-side. Pert and Redmond headed another Glebe burst into South Sydney's territory till a free kick by Brown sent them back. Near touch South Sydney heeled to A.Butler, on to McCabe, to C.Horder, to H.Horder, who veered towards the wing, but was splendidly downed by Algie, who was injured in the tackle. Play worked on to the goal-line, where Thiering secured and punted down-field, but a comrade was off-side, and the ball was recalled and scrummed near the goal-line. The superiority of the Glebe pack in securing possession was no longer noticeable. A.Butler whipped it to McCabe, to Collier who sped across in the corner. H.Horder missed the goal. South Sydney, 14 to 2. Thiering, who had been knocked on the head now retired injured, and Redmond, who dropped back into the three-quarter line, at once started Glebe on the attack. He was, tatkled, and passed to Gray, who droppod the ball, which Butler decided and promptly sent to H.Horder, who kicked from the half-way, line into Glebe 25. Accompanied by Smith, Nicholls, and McCabe Horder followed up, and, the ball bouncing conveniently, was gathered in by the five-eighth, who scored at the goal-posts. The Reds outpaced again. H.Horder converted. 19-2. Glebe had fallen away a great deal. It was partly a case of youth v age. They were offering very moderate resistance to the fleet-footed South Sydney backs, who quickly increased their score. After working into the 25, the forwards heeled to A. Butler, who sent it to McCabe, to C.Horder, on to H.Horder. All passes to the left. The centre whipped it to Collier, who was well tackled by Bolewski and sent into touch. But he dropped the ball in the field in the corner, and H.Horder, following through after giving the pass, quietly picked up the ball and placed it over the line. The same player narrowly failed in a difficult, attempt to convert. 22-2. This was a choice piece of sharp combined play, with the Reds left almost standing. The Reds kicked to Brown, who, from the Coronation stand side, centred to Bolewski, who fumbled and regained the ball. Thompson, who had followed up fast, knocked the ball from the grasp of the full-back, and H.Butler, picking it up, transferred to Nicholls, who scored. It was one Glebe back against a horde. H.Horder converted. 27—2. More play in midfield followed, till the Red forwards heeled to Regan, on to McKivat, to Redmond, who passed towards Gray, but it was smartly intercepted by McCabe. In a twinkling the elusive five-eighth, flying goalwards, dodged an opponent and then passed to Nicholls, who crossed in the best of positions, but H.Horder missed the goal. 30-2. Glebe made a final spurt, and gradually worked to S.S. line, where Redmond secured in amongst a knot of player and sent a long pass to McKivat. The defending backs were out of position, and the Red skipper finished the season's scoring after outpacing Smith. Bolewski missed the goal. "No side". South Sydney victors on their merits by 30 to 5. T.McMahon referee.
