Reserve Grade - NSW Premier League - Round 14

v Western Suburbs, Campbelltwon Stadium, Sun Jun 17 12:50pm

LOSS 32-35

North Sydney Bears have been punished for their complacency during the last stage of their match against Western Suburbs on Sunday, losing 24-16. The Bears game had an ominous start, with the red and black team making an error within the first minute of the game that led to Western Suburbs scoring. The young Bears team managed to re-gain control during the first half though and went to half time up 18-12. "We were going forward with the football and playing to game plan, but even at 18-12 we still weren't playing that well," Bears coach Wayne Lambkin said. However, Lambkin described his charges as "their own worst enemy". "The boys were going through the motions in the last 15 minutes and we were up 24-16, until there was a slip up and that was it Wests took their advantage and put all the pressure back on," he said. "We just collapsed. We didn't apply pressure to our opposition because we thought we had the game won, but then there were a couple of missed tackles that led to tries and that was it." The Bears change rooms after the match was a sombre scene. "I didn't say much at all," Lambkin said of his post match wrap-up. "I just shut my mouth and went home, they knew themselves that they had made mistakes." The Bears "cruise mode," syndrome has been plaguing them for a while, but Lambkin needs a couple of his key players to look at how they approach their games before that can change. "I'm really relying on a few key players to come up with better options and to apply more pressure it's as simple as that really," Lambkin said. "We need some football maturity, where players are thinking about the when, where and how." Ryan Verlinden was put on report and suspended.
