LOSS 6-34

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Wests Tigers in Round 14 by 34-6 at ANZ Stadium tonight (Friday). Despite receiving a boost before kick-off with the return of Adam Reynolds to the fold, the Tigers put on an enthusiastic and controlled performance to down the red and greens in a six tries to one effort in front of 15,118 Members and supporters. Just seven minutes into the first half, the Tigers opened the scoring when a back-line movement saw the ball swing outside the last Rabbitohs defender before finding the hands of James Tedesco who planted the ball down. Pat Richards converted to make it 6-0. Martin Taupau backed up the earlier effort when he hit a short-ball close to the line – a gap opening up in the Rabbitohs defence to give the Tigers a 12 point lead with Richards’ conversion. After a roaring start from the Tigers 15 minutes in, Luke Brooks’ final tackle kick went out on the full, finally allowing the Rabbitohs to have a crack at the Tigers’ line. The mistake would prove costly when Bryson Goodwin forced his way over a few tackles later in what was Souths’ first meaningful attacking raid of the game. Reynolds made no mistake from out wide to narrow the game to 12-6. An arm wrestle ensued with both sides searching in vain to find an advantage and points. Reynolds came within inches of grabbing a forty-twenty for his side only to be denied by a desperate Kevin Naiqama batting the ball in play at the last second. With the clock winding down in the first half, a combination of penalties and errors from the Rabbitohs saw them under pressure on their own line and having to defend repeat sets. The red and green defence held strong though, with the sides going to the break with Wests leading by 12-6. On the resumption, despite some great early charges from the likes of Rabbitohs forward Chris Grevsmuhl, it was the Tigers who would score points through Luke Brooks – the young halfback leaving the Rabbitohs defensive-line clutching at straws as he raced through to score a try just inside touch. Richards added the extras to make it 18-6. The Rabbitohs continued to look for points, with Thomas Burgess being used as a battering ram close to the line. But the Englishman was held up over the line despite his better efforts. But it would be the Tigers who would score yet again when Taupau crashed over for his second of the evening out wide to make it 22-6. Another Rabbitohs error, 10 metres out from their own line on a bomb diffusion, set the Tigers up for another try to all but seal victory through centre David Nofoaluma. Richards converted from right in from to make it 28-6 with 10 minutes to go. Bryson Goodwin almost bagged himself a second four-pointer when he attempted to pick up a grubber-kick in the in-goal, but the centre was unable to control the ball. James Tedesco grabbed himself a second try with seconds remaining to take the final score to 34-6 with Richards’ conversion to round out the match. The Rabbitohs will now have the bye in Round 15 before going on to take on the Sea Eagles and Panthers, closely followed by their second bye of the year in Round 18.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 14

v Wests-Tigers, 5:30pm

LOSS 22-28

Late Changes - H.Preece and Talakai were out, Hiroti moves to center, Booth to lock, Perrin and Besgrove added to the bench.

Despite a gritty effort from he Rabbitohs’ NYC side – fighting right up until the final minutes of play, the Wests Tigers took the Round 14 points by 28-22 at ANZ Stadium tonight (Friday). Less than two minutes into the match, a defensive lapse from the Rabbitohs saw Tigers hooker Jacob Liddle dance through the middle of the field before racing the remaining metres to score adjacent to the posts. Veiru Mapesone converted to give Wests an early 6-0 lead. Off the back of three repeat-sets on the Tigers’ line thanks to penalties, the Rabbitohs attacked the line with vigour and eventually came up with points when Damon Goolagong crossed out wide. Jordie Hedges made no mistake from out wide to level it up at six apiece. Just over half way into the first half, a failed Tigers bomb diffusion on their own line gave the red and green’s another opportunity to score. But a forward pass on the second tackle ended the raid prematurely. But it would be the Tigers who draw blood next when a series of passes out wide eventually landed in the hands of winger Ryland Jacobs who dived over out wide. Mapesone converted from the touch-line to make it 12-6. The Rabbitohs’ problems were compounded on the very next tackle when Tigers skipper Te Maire Martin streaked through Souths’ defence to score under the posts before Mapesone added the extras to make it 18-6 going into the break. On the resumption, Rabbitohs replacement Tom Perrin hit-back for the side when he crossed millimetres inside touch. Hedges’ outstanding run of touch-line conversion form continued when he knocked the ball over the cross-bar to make it 18-12. The Tigers would ultimately have the next say though when Watson Heleta crossed for another Tigers’ four-pointer. While Mapesone missed the conversion, a penalty goal for the halfback minutes later made the score 24-12. Jordie Hedges added a four-pointer to his points haul when he crossed out wide. Hedges was unable to add the extras, leaving the score at 24-16. With just under six minutes remaining, Tigers centre Marion Seve overpowered the Rabbitohs’ defence to register another try for his side to make it 28-16. But even with the clock reading less than a minute remaining, the Rabbitohs continued to apply pressure, and as a result, Perrin grabbed his second of the night before Hedges converted the try in virtually no time at all. Despite a gallant effort, the it would be the Tigers who would go home with the points by 28-22.

DRAW 26-26

Late Changes - Nicholls, Hyland, Sione were out. C.Walker starts half, Millard five-eighth, Schaumkel fullback, Manuleleua starts on the wing and J.Garlick on the bench.

The North Sydney Bears fought out a rare 26-26 draw in Round 14 of the NSW Cup – grinding their way back from a 22-10 half-time deficit to come away with a point. Joel Reddy scored a double for the Bears, while other Rabbitohs squad Members such as Scott Sorensen and Cody Walker also contributed to the score-card – the pair grabbing a try each while Walker kicked three goals. Latrell Schaumkel grabbed the Bears’ other try. Schaumkel raced in early for the Bears before Reddy crossed shortly afterwards to make it 10-0 in the Bears’ favour after just 10 minutes. But by half-time, it was Mounties that would go to the break with a 22-10 advantage despite the positive early signs from the North-siders. An arm-wrestle ensued after the break that would see both sides struggle to score points, and with 21 minutes to go in the match, it would be Cody Walker who would break the points drought with his converted try to make it 22-16. Mounties hit back in the corner with 12 minutes remaining to take them out to 26 points. But the Bears would ultimately score again through Scott Sorensen and Joel Reddy to finish off the match at 26 apiece.
