LOSS 6-8

Rabbitohs have today (Sunday) gone down to the St George Illawarra Dragons by 8-6 in Round 3 of the NRL at the SCG in wet and slippery conditions. In a game whose style was dictated by the difficult conditions, the crowd of 17,824 witnessed a scoreless second half – both team’s few points coming in the opening stanza of the game. The Rabbitohs endured a horror start to proceedings, with a string of drop-balls, penalties and misdirected kicks and passes littering the opening eight minutes of play, eventually resulting in a penalty-goal to the Dragons through Gareth Widdop – the five-eighth kicking his team two points ahead. But the bad news didn’t stop there for Souths, with Greg Inglis’ kick-off being taken over the dead-ball line on the full by Dragons half Josh McCrone. Mercifully, the Rabbitohs would survive the Dragons onslaught in good field position thanks to a good pick-up from Cody Walker from an early Dragons kick. The men in Red and Green would make up for their early misdemeanours in part thanks to an inspiring run from Sam Burgess out wide. Burgess, who rampaged over two Dragons defenders, would be brought down just 10 metres from the line before the Rabbitohs backline clicked into gear – spinning it out to an unmarked Alex Johnston who scored the first try of the match and his 42nd try in 46 games. Souths fans collectively held their breath when Greg Inglis stayed down following a ‘third-man-in’ tackle from Jack De Belin. The Test fullback received treatment on his knee from trainer Troy Thomson in back-play while Cody Walker put the men in Red and Green’s back on the front foot with a torpedo kick that was knocked-on by Josh Dugan mere metres from the try-line. But the Dragons would survive the ensuing Rabbitoh onslaught. But the Rabbitohs would not survive the following Dragons set. With some adventurous play in the slippery conditions, Widdop kicked to the corner of 200 game veteran, Jason Nightingale, who planted the ball down just inside the dead-ball line to equalise the match. Widdop was unable to convert the try, leaving the score at six apiece. Another penalty to the Dragons within kicking distance saw Widdop again kick his team two points ahead as the rain began to tumble down to make it 8-6 in favour of the Red V. The sides continued to battle it out in the poor conditions with tempers beginning to fray seconds from half-time as Widdop and Rabbitoh Nathan Brown were warned for a minor altercation as the teams went to the sheds – the Dragons leading 8-6. On the resumption, the Dragons looked to be in control in the early stages as they continued to ask questions of the Rabbitohs defence. But the game would come to a grinding halt with just under half an hour of the match remaining as Sam Burgess stayed down injured following a strong run close to the line. Burgess was slowly medi-cabbed off the field with all the usual care and precautions necessary being taken. The loss of the lock-forward would momentarily jolt the Rabbitohs into action – Paul Carter seemingly going over to score the Club’s second try of the match. But the Bunker would disallow the try owing to an obstruction, leaving the score at 8-6. With 15 minutes on the clock remaining, a string of penalties against the Rabbitohs keept Saints parked firmly on Souths’ try-line. Compounding the issue, referee Jared Maxwell placed Kirisome Auva’a on report for a suspected crusher-tackle. The Rabbitohs would survive the onslaught, but not before things got even worse for the men in Red and Green. Damien Cook was taken from the field under the game’s concussion rules after being clipped on the head as the hooker made a tackle. The final score would read 8-6. The game will also be long remembered for the last second field goal attempt by Greg Inglis. Distracted by the serious injury to Sam Burgess he thought the scores were level.

South Sydney Rabbitohs forward Sam Burgess after being strecthed off, has been cleared of serious neck and spinal injuries following scans conducted on Sunday night. MRI and CT scans have shown no damage to the vertebrae or spinal cord. Burgess will continue to be monitored for any muscle injury around the neck and spine region, as well as any neurological issues arising from the incident in yesterday’s game. Rabbitohs Head Coach Michael Maguire is pleased to hear the positive results. “We’re all very happy to know that Sam hasn’t suffered any serious injuries from yesterday’s game,” Coach Maguire said. “I spoke to Sam and he feels very lucky and he wants to thank the medical staff from both the Rabbitohs and Dragons for their professionalism, the doctors and hospital staff who cared for him last night and this morning, as well as the Members and fans for their support and kind words. “We will continue to monitor Sam’s welfare and he knows he is in the best of hands with our medical staff as we move forward.” Sam was released from hospital on Tuesday morning.

U20 Nation Youth Holden Cup - Round 3

LOSS 24-26

Late Changes - Team was 1 to 17

South Sydney’s NYC (under 20s) side have gone down to the St George Illawarra Dragons by 26-24 at the SCG today (Sunday) in the final seconds of the match. In a match played in wet conditions, the lead changed hands on a number of occasions before a late second try to Luciano Leilua saw the Dragons come away with their first victory of the 2016 season with mere seconds on the clock remaining. After 10 minutes of to-ing and fro-ing, it was the Rabbitohs who would get on the scoreboard first on the back of sustained pressure in Saints’ own side of half-way. Rabbitohs Halfback, Liam Coleman, grubbered towards flying-centre Siosifa Talakai who beat the Dragons to the ball to open the scoring. Chad O’Donnell then added the extras from out wide to make it 6-0 in Souths’ favour. The Saints would hit back some eight minutes later though when hooker Reece Robson seized the opportunity to go himself from dummy-half – the play paying off with a four-pointer. Paora Kemp converted from close-range to equalise at six apiece. Neither side was clearly dominating proceedings, until a break in centre-field by the Rabbitohs’ Cam Murray eventually saw the ball landing in the hands of winger Tom Perrin, who raced some 40 metres to plant the ball down next to the posts. O’Donnell made no mistake to make it 12-6. Souths would go on with it following a mishandled bomb by the Dragons inside their own in-goal, with Rabbitohs fullback Latrell Robinson picking up the crumbs to score an unlikely try. O’Donnell made it three from three with the boot to make it 18-6 to take the teams to the sheds. On the resumption, the Dragons hit back through a rampaging TJ Uele, who touched down after overpowering the Rabbitohs defence. Kemp added the extras to make it 18-12 but the score would only remain that way for a few moments. With the heavens now bucketing down, the Dragons became more adventurous and Luciano Leilua would finish a long, ad-hoc phase with a try before Paora kicked to equalise at 18 apiece. The Saints would then take the lead with just over 20 minutes in the match remaining when Izaac Thomspson powered his way over out wide to make it 22-18 – Kemp missing his first conversion attempt of the afternoon. With 10 minutes left on the clock, a crucial error by the Dragons on their own line in an attempt to diffuse a final-tackle kick saw the Rabbitohs regather before Maia Sands crossed from dummy-half virtually untouched to again equalise the match. O’Donnell made no mistake with his attempt from right in front to steal the lead from Saints 24-22. The Rabbitohs looked well in control during the closing stages of proceedings, with the David Penna coached side throwing the ball around with confidence despite the slippery on-field conditions. But a late opportunity for the Saints resulted in the Leilua try, securing victory for them men in red and white.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 3

v Illawarra, Wollongong Stadium, Sat Mar 19 3:00pm

WIN 24-12

Late Changes - Gregorious and Miski are out. Moceidreke starts fullback, Hughes on the wing.

The Bears were convincing in their upset over the Cutters in Wollongong. The North Sydney Bears have beaten the Illawarra Cutters 24-12 at WIN Stadium this afternoon. The home side was boosted by the inclusion of Kurt Mann who replaced Adam Quinlan at fullback. The Cutters suffered a nightmare start when their kick off went out on the full and they were forced to defend early on. They survived the initial set but conceded a line drop out in the process and the Bears converted their opportunity into points when Ed Murphy caught a cross field kick and forced his way over. Eli Levido converted to make it 6-0 after 6 minutes. The Bears marched down field from the kick off and another Cutters penalty nearly resulted in more points as the Bears fumbled the final pass with line wide open. This gave the Cutters their first use of the ball and they made plenty of ground but a silly penalty at the end allowed the Bears an easy passage out of their own half. The Cutters managed to hold them out but minutes later another error gave their opposition yet more field position but a shepherd ended the Bears’ attacking raid and the Cutters made their way down field courtesy of a much-needed penalty. With the Cutters on the attack a Hutchinson cross field kick was safely defused but the Bears made an error coming out of their own end as the topsy turvy game continued with both sides guilty of poor discipline. In the 22nd minute Bears winger Tavtalatasi Tasi took advantage of some lazy Cutters defence and dived on a grubber inches from the dead ball line to grab the Bears’ second. Levido converted to make it 12-0. Three minutes later a Bears penalty gave the Cutters a great chance to score close to the line but remarkably it resulted in a try 80 metres down the other end of the field. A wayward pass was scooped up by Tasi who raced away and the ball eventually made its way across field to Bears winger Tom Hughes who beat Kalifa Fai Fai Loa to score a fantastic team try. Levido missed the conversion attempt but the Bears enjoyed a 16-0 lead. A forward pass in the 32nd minute ended another Cutters’ raid but the Bears followed this with an error of their own. Another Cutters penalty put the Bears in great field position, and with just 2 minutes left in the half Levido stepped up and slotted the penalty goal over to make it 18-0. The Cutters repelled the Bears early in the second half with a fine tackle that jolted the ball loose. Damian Sironen made the Cutters’ first line break in the 44th minute but couldn't find any support and the play broke down and the Bears went close to scoring at the other end but the Cutters intercepted a long pass and went on the attack. The Cutters appeared to score through winger Tom Carr in the 47th minute but some foul play involving Jake Marketo resulted in the try being denied and Marketo was placed on report for the incident. The Cutters were denied again when Mann went over in the 52nd minute, this time for obstruction, but the Cutters looked to be the better side in the second half. A mistake by the home side in the 56th minute put huge pressure on their defence and Hughes evaded several would be defenders to dive over out wide and score his second try of the match. Levido’s brilliant sideline conversion made it 24-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining. A Bears error from the kick off presented a great opportunity for the Cutters who needed to score with time running out. A Hutchinson long pass found Carr who tip toed down the sideline and dived over in the corner, a great display of athleticism by the young winger. Blake Wallace missed the conversion attempt and the home side trailed 24-4 with 18 minutes left. Cutters centre Corey Brown latched onto a poor Bears pass in the 67th minute and showed great strength and pace to score the Cutters’ second try. Levi Dodd missed the conversion and the home side trailed 24-8 With just 4 minutes remaining rising star Jacob Host ran onto a sublime Hutchinson short ball to score his sides’ third try but Taane Milne missed the conversion and the Cutters trailed 24-12.

NSWRL U16 Matthews Cup Round 6

v St George, 12:00pm

LOSS 20-22

Harold Matthews coach, Jason Peterson said that the Ball’s victory comes down to solid 60 minute performances. “They’re competing for the whole game and that showed on the score-board,” said Peterson speaking to Rabbitohs.com.au Peterson’s under 16s meanwhile were unable to snatch victory from the Dragons, going down by just two points to the Red V at 22-20 “We’ve gone back to training this week and reviewed the game to identify a number of areas for improvement and that’s what we’re focused on now,” said Peterson. “It’s the simple things we need to be mindful of – completing our sets and executing what we’ve been practicing at training, but it’s also about playing for the full 60 minutes. “There’s probably a 10 minute period during game’s where we’ve switched off in the past and that’s something we’ll be looking to work on this week. “There’s certainly belief in the squad that we can make the semi-finals. One pleasing thing is that the boys fight for each other and there’s a great deal of hunger. It’s all about this weekend’s game now.”
