WIN 34-24

The Rabbitohs have accounted for the St George Illawarra Dragons by 34-24 at ANZ Stadium tonight, with Bryson Goodwin and Adam Reynolds notching personal milestones in the process in front of 12,054 Members and supporters. Goodwin celebrated his 150th first grade game by scoring two tries to bring up his 500th NRL career point, while Adam Reynolds meanwhile joined an elite point-scoring Club that includes Eric Simms, Benny Wearing and Bernie Purcell by kicking his 800th career point. But while the Rabbitohs scored victory, it didn’t come easy. A mistake from Thomas Burgess inside his own side of half-way, invited the Dragons to have first crack at the line, and Jake Marketo would come up with points after hitting the ball at speed to make it 4-0 after just three minutes. Sam Burgess would also spill the ball moments later in almost exactly the same spot as his brother, again gifting Saints prime attacking position. But after a throw of the dice from the Red V, the Rabbitohs would for the third time make an error on the 40 metre-line – this time through Adam Reynolds. But Reynolds would atone for his error by forcing a repeat set after deliberately kicking into the upright moments later. A penalty and a few tackles later, Goodwin would find himself streaking over the line to celebrate his 150th game with a try. Reynolds was unable to convert, leaving the game squared up at four apiece. Errors would continue to affect Souths’ progress, and a penalty to the Dragons on the last tackle within kicking-distance, allowed Gareth Widdop to kick his side two points ahead at 6-4. The Dragons would then turn defence into a try off the very first tackle of a seven tackle set – Tim Lafai racing some 80 metres of the 20 metre optional restart to score, despite the chase of Cody Walker. The failed conversion attempt left the score at 10-4. Things would get worse for Souths when George Burgess went high on a Dragons player, allowing Widdop to take yet another shot at goal – the Englishman sailing the opportunity through the posts to make it 12-4. But while things weren’t coming easy for the Rabbitohs, a phenomenal 30 metre cut-out pass from Inglis to Nielsen millimetres in from touch saw the Indigenous winger grab his side’s second of the night. Reynolds again was unable to convert, leaving the score at 12-8. On the stroke of half-time and with Souths attacking, Cody Walker injected himself into the front-line on the final tackle, grubbering for himself before regathering to score a brilliant try himself – Walker pointing to his tribe on the Club’s Indigenous jersey in celebration. Reynolds added the extras to give Souths an unlikely half-time lead. Two drop-balls from the Rabbitohs in the opening minute of the first half, as well as a penalty saw the Dragons given multiple sets of six to score points. But while Souths’ defence would hold strong, the boot of Gareth Widdop would equalise at 14 apiece with another penalty-goal. Souths would bounce back mere moments later though, when Adam Reynolds kicked across-field, with the ball ending up in the hands of Kyle Turner, who scored his second try of the season. Reynolds converted to take a 20-14 lead. The Dragons would get one back though when Kalifa Faifai Loa took advantage of a lack or urgency from the Rabbitohs defence to narrow the gap to 20-18. The men in Red and Green would extend their lead with 18 minutes in the match remaining when a kick in-goal saw Paul Carter pounce on the ball next to the sticks despite an attempt from Josh Dugan to force a line drop-out. Reynolds converted to take the score to 26-18. With six minutes in the match remaining, Reynolds hoisted a kick into in-goal that saw Goodwin soar to score his second try of the game and his 500th NRL point. Reynolds added the extras in fine style from out wide to make it 32-24. A final penalty to the Rabbitohs would cap off the night for the side and for Reynolds, who kicked a simple penalty-goal to notch up his 800th point.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 11

v St George-Illawarra, 5:20pm

LOSS 22-34

Late Changes - Besgrove and Hamlin were out. Pheonix Hunt, Davis started on the bench.

The Rabbitohs NYC (under 20s) side has gone down to the St George Illawarra Dragons by 34-22 in Round 11 of the competition at ANZ Stadium after leading 16-8 at half-time. After just eight minutes of play that saw the Rabbitohs put the Dragons under sustained pressure, Cam Murray broke through the line from close-range to grab the first points of the match. Chad O’Donnell converted to make it 6-0. But while Souths would have all the early momentum, the Dragons would hit back half-way through the opening stanza when Paora Kemp crossed the line out wide twice in quick succession to take the score to 8-6 following two failed conversion attempts. The teams threw everything they could at each other for the remainder of the half, and it would be Souths who would come out on top, when O’Donnell spotted the slightest of gaps to squeeze through, before passing a long, cut-out ball out to Tom Perrin on the wing who scored. O’Donnell struck the conversion perfectly to make it 12-8 with two minutes left in the half. But as the siren sounded, the men in Red and Green would go over again through NYC debutant, Mawene Hiroti – the SG Ball graduate taking a beautiful cut-out pass from Liam Coleman down the short-side to score in the opposite corner. The teams would go to the sheds with Souths leading 16-8. The Rabbitohs continued to dominate after the break, with Tim Davis snatching the ball in traffic to slam it down next to the posts – setting up an easy conversion for O’Donnell who would make it 22-8. But the Dragons would not go down quietly though – the Red V beginning a damaging revival when halfback Jack Payne dummied before slicing through the Souths defence to grab his team’s third try of the night. Jai Field converted to bring the score to 22-14. Not long afterwards, TJ Uele powered his way over for the Dragons, and with Field’s conversion, made it a two-point ball-game at 22-20. The Rabbitohs lead would be lost with some 20 minutes in the match remaining, as the Dragons continued to dominate out wide – this time through Reuben Garrick, before Field added the extra’s from the touch-line to make it 26-22 in favour of the Saints. Donte Efaraimo then added his name to the score-card for the Dragons to extend the visiting side’s lead to 30-22 as the clock wound down. With five minutes remaining, Field grabbed a try of his own out wide to seal the match at 34-22.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 10

v Wentworthville, North Sydney Oval, Sun May 22 3:00pm

WIN 42-16

Late Changes - Hughes was out Miski started on the wing.

The North Sydney Bears have seen off a late charge from the Wentworthville Magpies, extending the Magpies' mid-season losing streak to five games. On a typically beautiful Sunday afternoon at North Sydney Oval, the Bears ran out to a convincing half-time lead and while poor discipline allowed the Magpies to mount a case for a Round 11 victory, the home side leave with another valuable two competition points. North Sydney wasted no time in opening their account for Round 11; halfback Eli Levido sent late inclusion Abbas Miski over in the corner after just four minutes. The conversion was missed but the home side grabbed a second just six minutes later, as Tautalatasi Tasi showed great strength to break free and run 40 metres to score. It brought in a back-and-forth ensuing 10 minutes as the Magpies looked to get on the board, but just as they were applying pressure on the Bears' line an intercept from Siosifa Talakai got the Bears 50 metres upfield and provided relief. Eventually the Magpies' defence couldn't hold up, and a miscommunication under a Levido kick bomb resulted in a fumble close to their own line. Tevita Coterall made the most of it in the ensuing set, crossing for a try which was converted for a 16-0 lead. Wentworthville hit back straight after, however, with Scott Schulte charging for the line and eventually burrowing his way under a lazy North Sydney defence. The kick was waved away, but the Magpies were on the board late in the opening stanza. On the stroke of half-time, a perfectly-placed Levido grubber was fumbled by Magpies Troy Dargan and pounced on by Coterall, who grabbed his second. Levido slotted the conversion for a 22-4 scoreline at the break. The Bears came out of the sheds and started the second stanza in the best possible fashion; a nightmare bounce from the kick-off found touch and gifted them an early attacking set, which needed just two tackles before Latrell Schaumkel crossed in the North West corner. With another conversion from Levido, the Magpies well and truly had their backs against the wall with 38 minutes remaining. The men in black and white continued to throw all they could at North Sydney but failed to reap any rewards, as they were first held up and then ruled to have knocked on in the in-goal. After 53 minutes, prop Daniel Alvaro scored off a fantastic individual run and captain Cody Nelson wasted no time in adding the extras. The Bears were on the wrong end of a string of penalties and errors and 10 minutes later Wentworthville crossed again - this time through Nick Kassis. Once again Nelson's conversion was successful and they reduced the deficit to 12. A penalty to North Sydney soon allowed them to get the lead back past two converted tries when Levido took the two points from in front. Five minutes later, Sitiveni Moceidreke put in an unexpected grubber for himself, which he pounced on to score and put the result beyond doubt with less than 10 minutes remaining. In the dying stages of the game, Siosifia Talakai took yet another intercept to run 60 metres and take a well-earned try. Damien Cook put the icing on the cake with a successful sideline conversion and the Bears ran out 42-16 winners.
