Rabbitohs want to return to Allianz Stadium

28th January 2025

South Sydney CEO Blake Solly has revealed the Rabbitohs would be interested in a return to Allianz Stadium should the NSW Government not upgrade Accor Stadium. The Rabbitohs have called Accor Stadium home since 2006, but as stadiums around Sydney, including Allianz Stadium and Commbank Stadium, receive major renovations, Solly wants the NSW Government to commit to their plan to upgrade the stadium before they make a decision on the home future of their club.

"We’ve been pretty consistent now for a long period of time that we want to stay at Accor provided the government and Venues NSW deliver on their commitment to invest into Accor,” Solly said. "If they’re not going to invest in Accor, we’d like to move to Allianz where the government has invested a billion dollars into creating a fan experience that is fantastic. We’ll be patient. We’re working with Venues NSW, we’re listening to the government, but at some stage they’re going to have to make a decision on the future of Accor and hopefully when they do that, they'll make a decision on our future. We’d like our next deal with Venues NSW and the government to be a 25-year deal not a 5 or 10 or 15-year deal. It's a great stadium but it's getting up to 30 years old now. It just needs a really strong renovation and refurbishment program to make sure it keeps pace with all the other stadiums that our fans and members go to. They want a fan experience… that matches what they get when they go to the other stadiums."

Randwick Council backs Rabbitohs Return to Moore Park

30th Apr 2025

Randwick City Council has thrown its support behind the South Sydney Rabbitohs making Allianz Stadium in Moore Park their regular home ground for NRL fixtures. At its April 2025 Council meeting Randwick Councillors unanimously supported a motion to back the bid by writing to the Premier and sharing a community petition.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker said the Rabbitohs were more than just a football club – they are a vital part of the region’s identity and community fabric. "The South Sydney Rabbitohs are one of the oldest and most iconic clubs in the country. Their story is deeply intertwined with our communities in Randwick and the southeast. From local junior footy to the elite level, the Rabbitohs represent passion, resilience and connection," Mayor Parker said. "It makes perfect sense for Souths to play out of Allianz Stadium, which is not only closer to their heartland and supporters, but also one of the best sporting venues in the country. This move will make it easier for local fans to support their team and help drive economic activity across our suburbs."

Rabbitohs return to Allianz Stadium Blocked by Venues NSW

    17th June 2025

South Sydney Rabbitohs’ hopes of moving their home games to the Allianz Stadium in Sydney have been dashed by the New South Wales Government. The Rabbitohs received a letter from NSW Sports Minister, Stephen Kamper, informing the club that the NSW Government has rejected the Club’s proposal to move home games to Allianz Stadium which is located in South Sydney heartland.

Rabbitohs play nine matches per season at Accor Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park under a contract that runs until the end of 2030. The club had been pushing to relocate to the new stadium at Moore Park, saying their current home lacks atmosphere and affects its ability to make money. In the letter sent to Rabbitohs chief executive officer Blake Solly, New South Wales minister for sport Steve Kamper outlined the government’s decision to deny the NRL club’s bid to make Allianz Stadium its full-time base. He has told the Rabbitohs to honour an existing contract requiring them to play the majority of their games at Accor Stadium through 2030.

Under their initial proposal, Souths had aimed to play nine games per season at the Moore Park venue, two at Accor Stadium, and one outside of Sydney. The government countered by offering only two or three matches per year at Allianz, keeping the majority at Accor. Club officials argued the original agreement with the government was made under the assumption that Accor would receive significant renovations – upgrades that never happened. The state government referred to financial constraints, including existing commercial and sponsorship arrangements, as the primary reason for denying the move. Kamper’s office estimates the shift could cost taxpayers between A$4.5 million and A$14 million annually.

Rabbitohs CEO, Blake Solly said: "Minister Kamper has written to us rejecting our request. We’ll review the letter and his reasons, then consider a response and our further options. We remain committed to discussing the issue with the Government and Venues NSW. This is by no means the end of the process. We strongly believe a move to Allianz Stadium will allow us to provide Members, fans and sponsors with an enhanced game-day experience, premium facilities, improved transport access, and central proximity for our supporter base, returning to our Heartland in South Sydney. We’ve asked the government for further details on the forecast financial losses if we move to Allianz. We are happy to keep discussing with the government a reasonable position and hopefully we get those details soon. We were originally promised those details in 2022."

Roosters chairman Nick Politis has remained adamant that the modernised $828 million tax payer funded stadium should remain exclusive to the Eastern Suburbs club. Something that all members of the public and Rugby League community rejects.
