Three Grade Win Over Melbourne
South Sydney bounced back in fine style as we returned to play at Homebush. It was a clean sweep in all three grades, the first since Round 24 2023. It was also our first ever two game victory over Melbourne in regular season rounds. The never say die attitude saw Walker kick a great 40-20 as he continue to improve late in the year to set up the team for late victory. We still need 3 more wins to make the finals. Now to play top 4 running Sharks down at the swamp.
Graham Double
Its been a tough road back for Graham as he returns for a Sterum injury. He had a 5 weeks off mid year and has steadily returned back to his best. He is now settled on wing while manages the load in defence, and is finding a home on the wing with combination with Wighton growing each week. This week he scored his 12th first grade double down the right wing. It great to see stretch back.
Williamson & Graham-Taufa doubles
Another week and Moala Graham-Taufa has another double down the right, making it 5 tries in 3 games. Ben Williamson, got a rare opportunity at left second row on the weekend and made the most of it. He ran off Gray and later Glover to score his first double in Rabbitoh colours. He is a handy backup.
Rooke and Keung doubles
Keung continues to be a handful as runs strongly close to the line. This week he crashed over for two tries, making 8 tries for the season. Harrison Rooke after stepping up from U19s has found a home on the left second row and scored a double also. He is proving a strong defender and working up some good combinations with Taj Alvarez. Looking forward to his progression.
Women narrow loss
This week our womens team had a battle royal against the Mounties womens team. In a very tight encounter with a desperate Mounties outfit, goalkicking proved the difference, as we drop back to 4th.
6-Again rule Change like a old scrum penalty
The 2026 changes to the 6-again rule continue to impact the season. Key metric ball in play is dropping, not because of penalties being replacd by 6-agains but by the fact teams are scoring way more tries. We had brought pendulum back last year but in 2026 is is clearly swung again the wrong way. We now have team walking off the mark, grabbing players while in attack or teams giving away penalties just to slow the play down. May rugby league fans are not a fan of this change as it opens up the game for too much referee interpretations as they struggle to keep up, not just the players and fans. We have evolved back into a time warp where no one knows what a 6-again infringement was for, just like no one knew what the scrum penalty was for back in the 1970 and 80's.
Round 21 - Stat Attack
Statistically it was good game. Completions improved to 86% from 76% last week. Errors improved to 9 from 12 last week. We gave away 3 penalties and 4 6-again calls from 5 last week. Souths Effective 1st tackle improved to a very good level of 24.4m from 26.8m last week. Our missed tackles dropped to a horrid level of 45 from 31 last week. Opposition offloads dropped to 11 from 8 last week.
Looking at our left side defence - Johnston-Siegwalt-Walker-Aitken (0-3-10-3) dropped to 16 from 12 last week. On the right side Graham-Wighton-Ward-Koloamatangi (0-3-3-5) dropped to 11 from 8 last week. Ruck defence Tatola/Fletcher-Garlick/Humphreys-Radel/Hubner-BSmith/LeBlanc (5-5-6-2) dropped to 18 from 10 missed tackles last week.
Our go forward dropped to 1637m from 1824m last week. With our props go forward dropped to a very poor level of 334m compared to 425m last week. Fletcher, Garlick and Dufty made 10+m per run. Koloamatangi, Tatola, Dufty, Graham, Johnston and Wighton made 100+m in the match. Dufty made 300+m for the match. Defensively Koloamatangi was our best in the tackling raking up 40 tackles.
