Anderson was a South Sydney junior before the outbreak of World War II. He enlisted in 1941and was stationed in the Middle East. On his way to Greece he was captured in Crete in 1941 and remained a prisoner-of-war for the rest of the war until freed in 1945. He worked as a camp labourer in the mines for the Germans at Stalag 7A and then Stalag 344. After returning home he stayed with his mother in Redfern, and made his South Sydney senior grade club and premiership debut in the 1945 Round 10 Third Grade clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sports Ground. The following year he stepped up into reserve grade in the 1946 Round 1 Reserve Grade clash against Newtown at Pratten Park. A month later he was called up to make his first grade club and premiership debut in the 1946 Round 5 clash against St George at Hurstville Oval.
Anderson was a small in stature centre, who maintained his football skills on the battle front during the war, playing for the Stalag prisoner-of-war rugby union team in his spare time.
Anderson played 4 seasons with South Sydney between 1945 and 1948. He played 26 first grade club and premiership games for South Sydney. Overall he played 33 senior grade career club and premiership games for South Sydney, scoring 5 tries.
