Baber is a one time South Sydney reserve grade premiership winner in 1943.
Baber is the son of Newcastle Rugby League pioneer Arthur Baber. He came to South Sydney in 1942 from Western Suburbs. During the 1942 grading trials Baber was struck by a spectator in the North Sydney trial. Later in the day a spectator riot broke out in the same game, when South Sydney playing constables Felsh, Armstrong, Whitfield and Thorn came from the field of play to restore law and order. He made his senior grade club and premiership debut for South Sydney in the 1942 Round 3 Reserve Grade clash against St George at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The following week he was called up to made his first grade club and premiership debut after the three previous five-eighth for South Sydney were injured, in the 1942 Round 4 clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at the Sydney Cricket Ground, but also injured on debut receiving 2 striches and concussion for his effort.
Baber is a bigger player, who possessed speed and would always take the shortest route to the line. He is a deadly tackler, but more suited to centre than five-eighth. Baber was a Fireman during his playing days at South Sydney.
Baber played 3 seasons with South Sydney, between 1942 and 1944. He played 7 first grade club and premiership games for South Sydney. Overall he played 23 senior grade club and premiership career games for South Sydney.
Baber played his final first grade club and premiership game for South Sydney in the 1943 Round 10 clash against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval.
