A one time South Sydney premiership winning squad member in 1971. Who also made a cameo in the 1970 premiership winning season. One time South Sydney third grade premiership winner in 1969. He also won the U21 President Cup as captain with South Sydney in 1969. Bampton is also a two time Pre-Season(Wills) Cup competition winner in 1972 and 1978.
Bampton is a South Sydney junior from Alexandria Rovers, Waterloo and Zetland. He played two season in the South Sydney junior reps in 1965 and 1969. He made his South Sydney senior grade debut in the 1969 Round 18 Third Grade clash against Penrith at Penrith Park. He played his first grade game in the 1970 Pre-Season(Wills) Cup semi-final against Canterbury-Bankstown at the Sports Ground. He made his first grade premiership debut in the 1970 Round 9 clash against Cronulla-Sutherland at Endeavour Field.
Bampton was a second rower or lock, who would was a uncomprmising worker in the South Sydney pack. After three seasons in Wollongong, Jack Gibson loured him back to South Sydney.
In Round 7 1978 Bampton made his frsit grade premiership debut as captain against Balmain at Redfern Oval. Bampton led South Sydney first grade for two seasons in 1978 and 1979. At the end of the 1978 Bampton led South Sydney on a tour of the Darwin, as part of the post cyclone Tracey rebuild of the Rugby League community.
Bampton played 6 seasons at South Sydney. He played 74 first grade club games for South Sydney, which included 51 first grade premiership games and 8 first grade cup games. He played 159 senior grade games at South Sydney, whih includes 136 senior grade premiership games.
Bampton played his final first grade premiership game in the postponed 1979 Round 14 clash against Manly-Warringah at Redfern Oval.
Bampton was awarded the best & fairest South Sydney player across all grades in 1970. In 1994 Bampton was awarded Life Membership of South Sydney. In 2006 he was also awarded life membership of the NSWRL. In 2008 he was named in the greatest ever Alexandria Rovers team at lock. Then in 2009 he was awarded a OAM(Order of Autralia Medal) for services to rugby league.
