Byrne was a one time South Sydney's U21 Presidents Cup winner in 1936. South Sydney's first Presidents Cup victory. He then played in 1936 Third Grade premiership decider with South Sydney.
Bryne was a South Sydney junior who played 2 season's in the junior reps in 1935 and 1936. He made his senior grade premiership debut in the Third Grade Round 13 1936 clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Oval. He would stay in the Third Grade team as it made the 1936 premiership grand final. In 1937 Round 1 he stepped up into Reserve Grade playing his first game for South Sydney against University at the Sports Ground. Late in same year, in the 1937 Round 8 City Cup clash he made his first grade club debut against North Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He made his first grade premiership debut in Round 1 1938 against Balmain at Leichhardt Oval.
Byrne played for 4 season with South Sydney. He played 26 first grade club games for South Sydney, including 21 first grade premiership games and 3 first grade cup games. He played 46 senior grade games for South Sydney, which included 34 senior grade premiership games and 10 senior grade cup games.
Byrne played his final first grade game in the 1939 State Championship Quarter Final against Central Newcastle at the Newcastle Showground.
