Quinlivan is the 3rd eldest brother of 5 brothers in the Quinlivan family who played rugby league with South Sydney. Quinlivan played in one South Sydney premiership decider in 1939.
Quinlivan is a product of the North Coast of NSW, playing in the Riverina before coming to South Sydney. He made his first grade debut in Round 2 1936 in the new Night Competition against Balmain at the Sports Ground. A few later he made his first grade premiership debut in Round 2 1936 against Newtown at the new Henson Park.
Qunilivan's dash and penatrative powers were his best assets.
At the end of the 1940 season, Quinlivan enlisted in the war effort, which would limit his avaialability, missing the 1941 and 1943 seasons.
Quinlivan would play 8 seasons for South Sydney. He played 72 first grade games, of which 63 were first grade premiership games and 6 were first grade cup games. He played 77 senior grade games, of which 68 were seniro grade premiership games. He scored 50 tries in senior grade football. In addition he played 7 short form games.
Quinlivan would play his final first grade premiership and senior grade game for South Sydney in the Round 6 1945 clash against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval.
