The Wire from the Hill - This Week

The teams met on the Agricultural Ground in the presence of about 800 spectators. South Sydney won by 31 to 3.

Newtown kicked off, and at once forced play. South Sydney were penalised in their own half. but Scott's attemptt at goal failed. Butler secured from the scrum, and, beating the Newtown backs, scored. Green failed at goal. South Sydney 3-0. South started a passing rush, and a fine bit of play by Levison, Jarman, and Storie ended with the last-named crossing the line, but Green's effort at goal failed to convert. South Sydney,6 to nil.

Jarman now retired hurt, and his place was filled by Golden. South kept the game dangerously close to Newtown's line until a free afforded relief. From the ruck near halfway Leveson secured, and passed to Butler, who sprinted across the line, and scored behind the posts. He also converted, and made the score - South 11 to nil.

South were now running over their opponents. The next to score was Cochrane, and Butler converted. 16 to nil. Newtown here put in a fine rally, and drove South back to their line by means of a brilliant rush. At the 25 Manton secured, ran and transfered to Taylor, who fell over the line, and scored a try, which was not converted. South Sydney, 16-3. South responded strongly to this setback, and the result was that Leveson scored in the corner. Green failed at goal. South Sydney 19-3, halftime.

South Sydney were outclassing theor opponents at every point. Their forwards gained the advantage from scrums, and the back division were showing excellent combination and pace. Newtown although exhibiting better form than in the first half, were not up to expectation. They were penalised in their own own half, and Green, with a splendid effort, kick a goal. South, 21 to 3. A pretty rush by South closed with a transfer by Butler to Cann, and the former converted. South Sydney, 26-3.

Newtown now threw more energy into their work, but when a dangerous wild pass spoiled a good effort. then Scott shortly afterwards secured a mark near the 25 flag, but failed to kick a goal. Butler secured from the scrum near Newtown's 25, and after a fine run transferred to Cann who, showing a rare turn of speed, scored behind the posts. Butler converted. The full-time scores were:- South Sydney 31; Newtown 3.
