Late Changes

Captain Adam Reynolds and Talakai are late withdrawls from the squad. Brad Dietz and Mociedreke have been brought in, with Goodwin now taking over as captain. For the first match T.Fuimano, Cherrington, R.Jennings, Murray and Mociedreke dropped out of the final team.

LOSS 12-15

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Canberra Raiders in the final seconds of their first pool match at the 2017 Auckland Nines tournament, 15 points to 12, at Eden Park. Poor ball handling and ill-discipline hampered the Rabbitohs’ performance, with the men in red and green turning over too much ball and giving the Raiders too many opportunities, including the final attacking raid which saw former Rabbitohs squad member Scott Sorensen score the match-winning try. Rabbitohs captain Bryson Goodwin kicked off and it would only take three minutes for the Raiders to post the first points through a bonus try to Brent Naden. Paul Roache converted to give the Green Machine a seven-nil lead. The Rabbitohs struck back four minutes later when Cody Walker scored a bonus try of his own following a series of controlled offloads and a pinpoint pass from Damien Cook. Walker converted his own try to level the scores at seven-all. That’s the way the scores would remain at half time, with both teams’ poor ball handling hurting their attacking game. Aaron Gray hobbled off injured in teh 8th minute. Cook put the Rabbitohs on the front foot with a clever 40/20 kick in the 12th minute, giving his side fantastic field position. Moments later, big Zane Musgrove bounded over for a bonus try, ducking under a high shot to score from close range. The Rabbitohs kicked out on the full from the kick off, giving the Raiders a leg up as they went on to score a try through Englishman Jordan Turner, taking the score to 12-11 in favour of South Sydney. The Raiders gave away a relieving penalty in the 16th minute only to see the Rabbitohs turn the ball over almost immediately. Another South Sydney attacking chance was blown in the 17th minute which gave the Raiders one final set of five tackles to score, and score they did with Sorensen finding space as the siren was sounding, allowing the Raiders to steal the win 15 points to 12.

LOSS 7-14

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Sydney Roosters 14 points to seven in the second of their 2017 Auckland Nines Hunua Pool matches at Eden Park this afternoon (Saturday). As was the case in the first game of the tournament against the Raiders, ill-discipline cost the Rabbitohs time with the ball in hand which cost the men in red and green come full time. The Rabbitohs started proceedings and great defence early meant the Roosters were held at bay for two consecutive sets on the South Sydney line, something virtually unheard of in Nines football. It would take six minutes before the Roosters would score with Paul Momirovski crossing off the back of a number of offloads. Connor Watson scored in the dying moments of the first half, beating just one defender to score and take the score line to eight-nil in favour of the Roosters at half time. Souths struck back in the 12th minute of play with Damien Cook racing 50 metres up the middle of the field to score a bonus try. Cook converted his own try to reduce the deficit to one point. The Rabbitohs had the momentum and a brilliant 40/20 kick from Braidon Burns put the Rabbitohs on the front foot. However three moments of ill-discipline thwarted any chance the Rabbitohs had of posting the points they needed, and a fairly soft try to Daniel Tupou in the last minute of the game, plus a conversion to Latrell Mitchell, gave the Roosters the win.

LOSS 8-19

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have finished their 2017 Auckland Nines campaign with 19-8 loss at the hands of the tournament favourites, the North Queensland Cowboys, at Eden Park today (Sunday). Despite resting a host of their stars, the Cowboys were able to cruise to victory on the back of Jason Taumalolo, Jake Granville and Kalyn Ponga. The Cowboys kicked off and put the ball out on the full, giving the Rabbitohs an early chance to attack. But as has been the Achilles heel of South Sydney throughout this tournament, an error on that first set gave the Cowboys the ball back which eventually led to a try to Javid Bowen in the third minute of play. Two minutes later the Cowboys would score again through Shaun Hudson, establishing an eight-nil lead in the first half. The Rabbitohs finally had the ball in good field position and young recruit Braidon Burns made the most of the opportunity, running to the right across field until he saw a gap, accelerating through the hole to score. The Rabbitohs locked up the scores at eight-all early in the second half when Cody Walker carried two defenders over the line to score. From that point on it was all the Cowboys with Ponga scoring a bonus try and Javid Bowen scoring his second four-pointer to give the competition favourites the 19-8 win. The Rabbitohs turned in what was arguably their best performance of the tournament against the Cowboys but the result sees South Sydney fail to qualify for the finals of the Nines tournament.
