1908 NSWRL Premiership - Trial

South Sydney v Newcastle

Wentworth Park

Sat Apr 18, 3:15pm

WIN 22-6

Selected Trial teams

A Newcastle club known as the Rebels, wearing red and white hooped-jerseys, played a trial match that would prove to be Newcastle’s first ever game of Rugby League. The match was played in an attempt to teach the Rebels – comprised of Rugby Union defectors – the new game, and reports suggest that a pack of playing cards was used to teach players the game’s positions and scrum formation. The historic encounter at Wentworth Park was ultimately won by Souths 22-6.

South, playing with wind, soon met trouble, for Bailey scored at once. The kick failed. Play was very fast, no time being lost in line work. As quick as a flash the ball travelled from 25 to 25. South, with ball at toe, came through, and Anderson securing, fell over and scored. Three all. Rosewell to Storie saw the latter race over, and kicking the goal, made the score Souths 8 Newcastle 3. Anderson was the next scorer followed by an incessant attack on Newcastle line till half time arrived.

Both ground and ball were slippery, and good handling was difficult Patfield secured from a scrum and helped by Kay, reached the home 25, where Green, by a good run brought relief. Evans reached the line but failed to fall over. Conlin, from a long kick, rushed out, and carried well out of danger. Mulling on the part of the visitors at centre enabled Andenson to rum in unopposed, and he was quickly followed by Jarman, the latter try being converted. South 16, Newcastle 3. The visitors frequently overran the ball, and became offside, scrums in the home 25 resulting. From one, Coleman secured, and forced his way over. Final scores South Sydney 22, Newcastle 6.
