LOSS 26-33

Another blistering performance from star Cody Walker was not enough to lift a depleted Rabbitohs over the line against the Canberra Raiders, falling 33-26 at Accor Stadium. Missing three players with State of Origin commitments and with the late withdrawal of Campbell Graham, South Sydney knew they had to come out firing against an in-form opponent in the Raiders. They did just that, striking in the seventh minute to open the scoring with a brilliant piece of individual play from Walker. He took possession on a nice shape, squaring up the defensive line and putting Jed Cartwright into a gaping hole, leaving the fill-in centre an easy passage to the line, scoring his first NRL try. Their lead soon evaporated however, with a Blake Taaffe try-saver on Joseph Tapine followed up the very next play with a try to Corey Horsburgh to put Canberra in front 6-4 after 14 minutes. When Alex Johnston was unable to get back into the field of play from a kick on the next set, the Raiders struck again through Albert Hopoate in the corner to extend their advantage. Some tired defence in the middle of the field allowed the Raiders to make easy metres, capitalising again through Hopoate out wide to take an imposing 16-4 lead. Order was restored and the Rabbitohs hit the scoreboard once again in the 30th minute, as quick hands from Walker allowed them to take advantage of the overlap after the defence rushed up, putting Johnston over to cut the margin back to eight. A contentious call of a strip on Keaon Koloamatangi close to the line gifted the Raiders an easy shot at a penalty goal, giving them an 18-8 they would take to the break. South Sydney had the perfect start to the second half, with Walker again in the thick of things. After a few repeat sets, the classy five-eighth took it to the line and drew defenders in once again, this time putting Isaiah Tass over the line untouched. A Lachlan Ilias kick was charged down in the 51st minute with a regather from Michael Chee Kam proving crucial. Just a few plays later, early ball to Tass had the Raiders in two minds, as he drew and passed to Johnston for his second of the night and Souths’ first lead since the early stages of the contest at 20-18. Just as the Rabbitohs started to look comfortable, Canberra hit back with 21 minutes to play, as a cut-out from Jack Wighton led to a swift backline movement that resulted in Tom Starling crossing the stripe. Like clockwork, with the game in the balance coming into the final period, Walker’s brilliance shone through once again, getting to dummy half and putting in a grubber close to the line, with a flying Damien Cook touching down first to take the lead at 26-24 with 10 minutes remaining. That wasn’t to be the final say, as Wighton showed his own skills soon after, getting through the line to help Hopate to his treble and the Raiders to a four-point lead inside the final five.

Reserve Grade - Knock-On Effect NSW Premiership Round 13

v Canberra, 5:10pm

WIN 26-20

Late Changes - Gordon starts prop, Rahme at lock, Chapman on the bench. Hodge is the concussion sub. The South Sydney Rabbitohs have beaten the Canberra Raiders 26-20 in a tough Round 13 contest to bounce back from last week’s loss to Parramatta in The Knock On Effect NSW Cup. Both sides drew level at 14-14 and 20-20 on the scoreboard in the second half, but it was a try to Souths centre Josiah Karapani that broke the deadlock and sealed the win for the Rabbitohs. With four tries apiece it was the goalkicking of Souths half Dean Hawkins that proved the difference. The Raiders blew an early chance at scoring the first try, when the Bunnies lost possession just outside their red zone. The ball found its way to winger to Utuloa Asomua but he wasn’t able to control it before it went over the northern touchline. Souths were rewarded for toiling hard in defence with the opening try to Richard Kennar. The winger scored down the southern touchline to take his side to 6-0 after the Rabbitohs capitalised on good field position. The Raiders didn’t take long to reply, when Peter Hola crossed five minutes later. Raiders five-eighth Matt Frawley burst through the defence after Canberra got themselves close to the line. Hola who went through a gaping hole to score untouched. Jed Stuart scored the Raiders second try off Canberra’s next attacking set to put the visitors in front 10-6. The Raiders started to dominate the ruck as the Green Machine began to find space comfortably. Behind on the scoreboard, errors started to creep into the Bunnies game but their defence remained strong. A try to Shannon Gardiner helped Souths draw level on the scoreboard. Peter Mamouzelos darted out quickly from dummy half after getting a good play the ball to set up Gardiner back on the inside. The Rabbitohs went back out in front 12-10. Just minutes out from halftime, the Raiders snatched the lead back with a try to Brad Morkos to take a 14-12 advantage into the break. Souths had a clumsy start to the second half, but they drew level through a penalty by Hawkins (14-14). The Raiders continued to give away penalties through their ill-discipline in defence. It proved costly when hooker Mamouzelos scurried out from dummy half to put the Rabbitohs back out in front. The Raiders finally hit back through speedster Xavier Savage, who scored off the back of a penalty. After both sides scrambled in defence to shut down several attacking raids, it was the Raiders who cracked first. Karapani managed to dive on a loose ball to score after Hawkins put in a wobbly kick on the last tackle, which bamboozled defenders.

NSWRL U21 Jersey Flegg - Round 12

v Canberra, 3:25pm

LOSS 18-32

Late Changes - Laui was out. Yeo was the concussion sub. It was a disappointing end to the match for the Jersey Flegg Cup against the Canberra Raiders, who were run down in the final half hour after taking a healthy lead. The Rabbitohs took a 12-4 advantage at the break, and extended soon after with Tyrone Munro crossing to extend to fourteen points – however a late surge from the Raiders saw the Red and Green on the back foot for the remainder of the contest. It was an unfortunate result for the side who had won their last two matches, and still remain within the top five with the competition reaching its halfway point.
