LOSS 10-46

With the Top 25 for both squads in the USA preparing for the Las Vegas clash, this match resembled a Reserve Grade trial. The match opened in the middle of a thunderstorm but had cleared by half-time. It was a tough outing for Souths who tried hard in wet conditions throughout the contest. However, too many errors at key points in the match meant that they were ultimately unable to keep up with their opposition when it mattered most. While the end result was decisive in favour of the Roosters, it was a tight contest early, with both sides trading tries to make it 6-4 to Souths at the 11-minute mark. The Roosters opened the scoring in the third minute through edge back-rower Meli Nasau, The Fijian going over relatively easily after a big shift to the left gave him too much space for the defence to handle. The Rabbitohs then hit back after a Roosters error and a subsequent set restart resulted in a sustained run of possession in the attacking zone. The pressure proved unmanageable for the Roosters, with Souths capitalising through lock Matthew French who crashed over after running a tough line. Souths had their chances in the remainder of the first half, and looked dangerous at times off the back of Roosters errors and set restarts. But errors of their own and the slippery conditions in general made it tough to capitalise on their opportunities. The Roosters on the other hand were able to hang onto the ball at crucial times, resulting in tries to Turoa Williams, Corey Ross and Salesi Foketi for a 20-6 lead at the break.

Souths knew they would have to score first if they were to rein in the Roosters’ 14-point half-time advantage. They displayed clear positive intent early, making 66m off their first set off the kick off. However, a penalty in possession for blocking kick pressure meant that they would be unable to turn this into points. The task of a comeback was then made more difficult for Souths, as the Roosters scored the first try of the second half through Kyron Fekitoa in the 48th minute. An impressive double to Roosters fullback Callum Gromek then put the result even further out of reach for the Rabbitohs, who now found themselves staring down the barrel of a 36-6 score line at the 62nd minute. The Rabbitohs were able to find a consolation try in the 65th minute through winger Leon Te Hau, who finished off a nice backline movement to score in the corner. It was to no avail however, with the Roosters finishing with two unanswered tries to Michael Coleman and Emery Jolliffe for a fulltime score of 46-10 over the Rabbitohs.

NSWRL U19 SG Ball Cup - Round 4

v Warriors, Redfern Oval, Sun Feb 25 11:30am [Bunnies TV]

LOSS 14-44

Late changes - Hallie is out. Nosa starts at five-eighth, Risati at prop, Berryman on the bench. Felsch is the concussion sub. Rooke, Bilisch and Heslin dropped off the bench. South Sydney got off to great start when Sauders kicked a 40-20, which allowed a backline move to see Fong score in the corner. Tovio broke the line soon later but dropped the ball over the line. The Warriors then worked it up the field and scored a try from a dummy half run to take the lead 4-6. Soon after the Warriors steamrolled over Rugless to score again. Taylor was on the end of a great backline line move only to be denied in what looked like a fair try. Within 6 tackles the Warriors again crossed. The second half was dominated by the Warriors as they ran in 4 tries before Souths hit back with two late tries.

NSWRL U17 Matthews Cup - Round 4

v Warriors, 10:00am [Bunnies TV]

LOSS 17-22

Late changes - Tangi is the concussion sub. Anitelea-Tsioussis and Gioello dropped off the bench. A lovely darting run by Jennings in traffic saw South Sydney take the lead. After some sustained pressure a nice run by Aufai-Farani scored a classic second rowers try. A lovely break by McKay-Filiha saw a Warriors player in the bin for a professional foul. A few minutes late he also scored. The Warriors came out in the second half determined to turn aound the result. And with some powerful play and run of penalties they scored two tries and had the game at 16 all with 4 minutes to play. A great catch by Jennings off a short drop out gave the Rabbitohs posession and they worked they way down the field and Berryman-Duff scored a field goal to put the bunnies in front 17-16 with 2 minutes on the clock. But a kick on the last that went dead gave the Warriors one last sniff and some power running saw their big prop score with seconds on the clock to steal the game.
