2025 - The Cyber View from the Hill

3rd Sep 2025

Calvary arrives too late

3 wins on the trot and a bye and we moved up the ladder to 13th spot. A win this week would see us finish 4 points out of the Top 8 in another "what could have been season". This week another group of players make their return from injury as we start to look more a NRL squad once again. All ready for a finals campaign, but alas we are not in finals contention. Now for our final game of the season against our arch rivals who are desperate for a win top make the Top 8.

Murray returns

Captain CAmeron Murray has had a season from hell with injury over the last 12 months. first with a hand injury during the rep season to the then injurying his achilles in the pre-season. He has worked tirelessly all year to get back on the paddock. While he will come back on the bench, it shows his commitment to the playing group and the club. Welcome back champ.

Poynton double ends the season

A return to fullback and we saw the damage that Poynton can do chiming into the backline. He score two more tries and 3 goals in the last game of the season in a quality display. The U21 team have now finished their season. Daniel Wright finished the U21 season as our top try scorer with 10 tries and Charlie Poynton our U21 top point scorer with 90 points from 7 tries and 31 goals.

Ritchie double keeps Souths still in the hunt

A move from centre back to second row has helped get Abbie Ritchie more involved and able to run off our halves. On the weekend she scored two strong second rower tries near the try line. The win kept the women's team in the hunt for a Top 4 finish with 2 rounds to go.

Wildcard weekend being considered

As we head into the 2025 finals, the talk of what should the finals campaign look like when we increas the team to 18 with a eye on what a 20 team format may look like. IN 1995 when we expanded to 20 teams we ran with a 10 team finals format using a 2 pool Top 5 format. The current proposal however is a bit different with only teams 7, 8, 9 and 10 playing with the top 6 teams having the week off, in what they call a Wildcard weekend. In a 18 team structure the Top 8 is a good balance, just like a Top 5 was in a 12 team comp years ago. But I would not go to a 10 teams final mode until we have 20 teams. 10 teams finals mode in a 17 or 18 team comp rewards poor performing teams too much.
