WIN 32-6

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have taken down the ladder-leading Brisbane Broncos in their own backyard with a dominant 32-6 victory at Suncorp Stadium. The Rabbitohs overcame a torrid first half with a man in the sin bin to storm home with a 26-point victory, highlighted by a stirring performance from centre Campbell Graham. The Coogee Wombats junior continued his try-scoring form at Suncorp Stadium with a hat-trick parking in his fifth try at the venue in 2023, while taking the competition lead with eleven to his name. Fullback Latrell Mitchell had another busy outing with two tries to his name and four goals, while front rower Junior Tatola marked his reutrn by topping the metres with 192 to his name in just 48 minutes. The Rabbitohs found themselves under pressure early, and it was desperation from Cameron Murray that saw the skipper sent to the sin bin for a professional foul, with Brisbane taking an early 2-point lead with a penalty goal. Welcoming the challenge ahead, the men from Redfern struck back immediately with the best possible reply, with a neat grubber from Lachlan Ilias taken by Campbell Graham, giving the Rabbitohs a 6-2 lead. The back and forth continued in this free-flowing contest, with Jesse Arthurs crossing for the Broncos out wide with the sides locked up at 12-apiece after as many minutes. Off-the-cuff play troubled the Rabbitohs out wide, with the hosts narrowly missing out on another try with Selwyn Cobbo losing the ball over the line as Murray returned to the field of play. Ill discipline hurt the Red and Green on both sides of the ball, with desperate defence denying Kurt Capewell and Keenan Palasia - surviving another raid as Cobbo was denied once more. Junior Tatola looked to swing momentum with a strong opening run as both sides entered an arm wrestle - with Alex Johnston shutting down another threatening charge from their opponents. With the intensity ramping up close to half-time, both sides came together in heated exchanges as errors with the ball in hand cruelled the Rabbitohs while Brisbane failed to ice their changes. A Captain's Challenge five minutes from the break saw South Sydney with a scrum feed just ten minutes from the line, and the Rabbitohs took a 12-6 half-time lead as Graham charged over for his second for the night off a pass from Damien Cook. The roll-on continued just minutes into the second half, with a towering kick from Cody Walker finding Latrell Mitchell, who swooped onto the ball to slam it down, with his conversion giving the Rabbitohs an 18-6 lead. Brisbane found themselves down a man the following set after Farnworth was found tripping Graham, and while Johnston looked likely to add his name to the scoresheet, a desperation tackle saw him lose possession over the line. That mattered little, however, as a bullet-like pass from Mitchell saw winger Taane Milne careening down the sideline before throwing the Steeden inside to Graham, who completed his hat-trick. Damien Cook powered over the line for the second time in as many weeks, only for the try to be overturned by the Bunker, while the Rabbitohs survived a long-range break from the Broncos on the following set. Not deterred by the recent miss, the halves stood up with Ilias cutting out wide to Graham, who sent the ball back inside to Cody Walker for the side's fifth try of the night with a quarter of the match remaining. No doubt Ron Coote would have been proud of the cover defence shown as Isaiah Tass and Mitchell sent Reece Walsh into touch as the fullback went over before their urgency shut down the Broncos after multiple set restarts on their line. Isaiah Tass collected a wayward kick to streak downfield, and the killer blow came a few tackles later as Mitchell bagged his second after engineering a clever fifth-tackle play. Cook was denied once again following a dubious knock-on call, with the Rabbitohs keeping their opponents to just one try and wrapping up a well-earned 32-6 victory. The Rabbitohs have now won six out of the last ten matches against the Brisbane Broncos.

A significant amount of contrevosey erupted after the game when it was idenified that for around 5 to 10 seconds Souths had 14 men on the filed. Moale enter the field of play as Burgess finished his last hitup, before immediately leaving the field. The confusion occurred as their was a double change occurring with Tatola and Burgess going off for Arrow and Moale. The NRL is investigating the matter.

v Canberra, McDonalds Park, Wagga Wagga, Sat Apr 29 12:40pm [Foxtel/Kayo]

LOSS 16-22

Late Changes - C.Hodge is out. Gordon starts prop, B.Gray on the bench. Chan-Foon is the concussion sub. In a back-and-forth contest that saw a number of late calls deny the Red and Green of a hard-fought victory, the Rabbitohs were narrowly defeated by the Canberra Raiders in Wagga Wagga. Izaac Tu'itupou Thompson opened the scoring with an early four-pointer in the corner, with Ethan O'Neill charging through to give the side the lead just after Canberra responded with their first try. The Raiders struck just before half-time to level the scores at the break and were the first team to get on the board shortly after the sides returned, but it wasn't long before Blake Taaffe struck back to bring the difference to two points. Both teams continued to go to and fro, but ultimately a late try to Canberra gave the hosts the victory, with the Rabbitohs denied on two occasions in the final ten minutes.

NSWRL U21 Jersey Flegg - Round 9

v Canberra, 11:00am

LOSS 4-22

Late Changes - Jinks is out. Saldanha is the concussion sub. Following a big month that has seen a number of SG Ball players make the leap to the Jersey Flegg competition, the young Rabbitohs were gallant but unable to come away with the two competition points against the Raiders in Wagga Wagga. Following a strong half that saw debutant Jye Gray not only return from a hamstring injury but score the first try of the match, the Red and Green were in a good position at the break, trailing by just six points. However, with player unavailability playing its part in the second stanza, the Rabbitohs were unable to wrestle back momentum, with the final scoreline reading 22-4. Kalo Kalo has broken his leg in the match.
