South Sydney bowed out of the 2026 premiership race is a hard faught 10 to 20 loss to Newcastle at the Allianz Stadium. Newcastle opened the scoring when Young caught a uncotested bomb and offloaded to McEwen who scored. A kick in goal by Walker that nearly resulted in a try, resulted in a melee as Gagai and Mitchell went at each other with Mitchell penalised. South Sydney after being under pressure saw Wighton come up with a great try saving tackle. Newcastle scored again when they kicked in behind the line for Gagai to score. The Knights almost went back to back after a Pongia break, but for a another try saver this time from Graham. In back play Walker went down with a calf injury and hopped off the field, with Humphreys switching into 5/8. South Sydney finally scored late in the half when Koloamtangi danced across the defensive line before linking with Fifita and Wighton who sent Graham to score in the corner. Mitchell converts from the sideline. Late in the half saw Fifita held up over the line. But it was the Knights in a strong display leading 6 to 10 at the break.
After a torrid opening 15 minutes, it was bit of class by Humphreys, Mitchell and Johnston that saw Sullivan score. Only to be denied when a strip on Johnston was ruled a knockon by the bunker. This turned out to be crucial decision in the context of the contest. A long break by Pongia, almost resulted in a Newcastle try under the post soon after. But moments later Johnston went down gingerly and went off soon after with a knee injury. But in the next set of six, Yong made a big break down the sideline before the Knights McEwen scored his second for the after noon, with Knights jumping out to a 10 point lead. Newcastle then go back to back when Young beats his outside man Brandon Smith to score in the corner. And like that the Knights have a 14 point lead with 13 minutes to play. South Sydney score late in the game through a backline move that saw Mitchell put Gray over out wide. Mitchell fails to convert. But it was the Knights who hung to win the elimination final 10 to 20. South Sydney bowing out for season 2026.

Judiciary News
Walker was placed on report and later charged by the Match Review Committee with a High Tackle - Careless Grade 1 in the 25th minute. As it is his second offence it carries a base $2,500 charge. He has since taken the early guilty plea reducing the fine to $1,800.

South Sydney open the scoring when Yaranumua took on the line and scored. South Sydney go back to back when Yaranumua works a well worked blind side play to send Tierney over out wide. McGregor converts. For the next 10 minutes South Sydney hammered the Newcastle line for 5 sets, but were not able to score. Then Newcastle hitback through a break by winger down the left side who scored under the posts. Newcastle almost went back to back from a kick in behind the line, but were ruled offside. South Sydney lost Claudia Brown for a dangerous tackle attempt on the kick chase and was sent to the sin bin. South Sydney hang to halftime leading 12 to 6. A long break by Newcastle was saved a great try saver by Shipton. After a arm wrestle period, Newcastle scored first in the second half under the posts. Scores are even at 12 all. Newcastle putting pressure on South Sydney late in the game crash over and score the match winning try. Newcastle winning 12 to 18 and advancing to the Grand Final, while the Rabbitohs continue to the Preliminary Final.

Late Changes - Veainu starts at centre, Chruch at secod row, Kolaomatangi on the bench. Ahokava is the concussion sub. Hopoate and Muller drop off the bench. South Sydney bowed of the finals race in a narrow 18 to 20 loss the Mounties in the Preliminary Final. Mounties opened the scoring after working their way up field and a dropped ball by the Tierney allowed them to swing the ball and score in the corner. South Sydney hit back when Taumoepeau-Williams broke the line and ran 30m to score. McGregor failed to convert. A well worked ruck attack saw McGregor make a break and then link with Shipton who scored under the posts. McGregor converts. Mounties equalised when they moved the ball to the right and broke through and tackle and ran 30m to score. 10 all. After a great run by Tierney saw South Sydney almost scored under the posts. Halftime 10 all. South Sydney regained the lead from a penalty goal to McGregor, when she was taken out in back play. Midway through the second half it was Mounties who regained the lead when they crashed over under the posts. Mounties lost a player after a break by McGregor resulted in a professional foul. Soon after South Sydney had another well worked move that saw Veainu scored near the posts. McGregor converts, South Sydney back in front by 2 with 10 minutes to play. A dropped ball and then a penalty, put Mounties on the attack with 7 minutes to play. A one on one strip on Neilson, saw Mounties score off the next tackle in the corner and steal the game winning 18 to 20.
