The Wire from the Hill - This Week

Played on Wentworth Park in the presence of a small attendance. Both teams were considerably weakened by the absence of leading players on their way home. South won, but the play was rough, and characterised by too much offside. Mr Hooper was referee.

South kicked off, and fast centre work followed, until South rushed the ball to the line, where Glebe were penalised. Green missed the goal from an easy position. Ogaard from centre set sail fast for South's line, but was pulled down right in the mouth of the goal. Scrummaging and fast play in Glebe 25 with South forwards working hard brought disaster to Glebe for Senior from a short pass in, the rack dashed over and scored. Green failed to convert. South, 3, Glebe, nil. South soon added to this, for Storie made a splendid line run, and evaded several tackles, Ryan dragging him over the goal line. Again Green failed. Coxon soon followed with a dribble, which scored. Green was more successful this time, South, 11; Glebe, nil. South kept play in Glebe 25, where eagerness lost many chances. When Glebe made an opening wild, bad passing generally pulled them up, and thus it was that for some time they could not pass half-way. Storie rushed through with Green in attendance, but a pass forward spoiled a certain score. Half time came with play in neutral territory.

South had the better of matters in the first half at a scrambling game. Brilliancy was lacking individual effort being more in evidence than collective play.

On resuming Glebe played with more dash, and had South defending but more clever tactics by South's half-backs soon gave danger to Glebe, Edwards alone being able to show form sufficient to keep the invaders at bay. Helped by a rebound, Glebe gained considerable ground, and worked play to South's 25, where a forward rush ended with Williams falling over. The kick was a failure. South 11, Glebe 3. Hard tackling and heavy scrummages made the game anything but interesting, and so play dragged on. A rush succeeded scrum after scrum on South's line, the defendeers developed a passing rush, in which the ball was handled by most of the backs, ending with Storie cutting in, and scoring in a splendid position, and Green converted. South continued to worry Glebe. A fine run by Jarman saw him hauled down on the line by O'Keefe. Glebe defended till full-time, with the scores; South 16, Glebe 3.
